The graphic editor GIMP 3.1.2 is now available, marking the first release in the experimental branch 3.1, which is shaping the functionality of the upcoming stable branch GIMP 3.2. The GIMP 3.2 branch aims to support link layers and vector layers, as well as expand support for the CMYK color model and options for color management. Pre-built binaries have been released for Linux (AppImage and Flatpak for x86 and ARM64 architectures), macOS, and Windows. <\/p>\n
The changes in GIMP 3.1.2 include: <\/p>\n

Options have been implemented for rendering previews of brushes, fonts, and palettes using the foreground and background colors of the active theme. For example, in dark mode, brushes can now display light colors on a dark background, rather than only on a white background.

A new theme called 'System Colors' has been added, which automatically adjusts interface colors based on the active system themes in Linux and Windows, updating as the system theme changes.

A new blending mode for drawing called 'Overwrite' has been proposed, allowing direct pixel replacement in the drawing area without blending the brush's transparency values with existing pixels. This mode is primarily intended for use with the 'pencil' tool and can be utilized for pixel art when uniform opacity is required, unaffected by the transparency levels of the original area.

The text tool has added an option to control the direction of the outline. For instance, the contour around letters can be directed inward, outward, or in both directions.

The ability to non-destructively apply filters to channels has been added, similar to what has already been implemented for layers. The 'Channels' panel now features an Fx column, allowing editing, reordering, deleting, and merging of filters. The implementation of non-destructive image editing has been refactored, simplifying future functionality expansion and code maintenance, while also resolving some existing issues.\n
In the color selection interface corresponding to the CMYK scheme (CMYK Color Selector), ink coverage calculation (Ink Coverage, the amount of ink applied to paper in one spot) is implemented. When preparing an image for printing, this parameter allows for assessing exceeding threshold values in printing systems (for instance, excessive Ink Coverage can lead to smudging or may not be suitable for the type of paper being used).

Support for uploading RAW images from cameras has been added using the ART application (AnotherRawTherapee, a fork of RawTherapee).\n
Support for exporting palettes in kpl format for use in the graphics editor Krita has been added.\n
The ability to import animated images in APNG format has been implemented.\n
Support for uploading multilayer images in OpenEXR format has been added.\n
Support for exporting in JPEG 2000 format has been added (previously only import was supported).\n
Support for importing and exporting images and textures in TIM format, which was used in games for the Sony PlayStation 1, has been added.\n
Support for importing and exporting images in OpenRaster format, which uses extensions to remember selected and locked layers, has been added.\n
Support for the OTA Bitmap format (Over The Air Bitmap), which was used for encoding black-and-white images on old Nokia phones, has been added.\n
Support for importing images in the JIF (Jeff's Image Format, an extended version of GIF) format has been added.\n
Support for importing images in AVCI format (Advanced Video Coding) has been added.\n
Support for exporting images in HEJ2 format (JPEG 2000 in a HEIF container) has been added.\n
The ability to import pat files with Photoshop templates has been implemented.\n
Support for exporting images in PSB format, used in Photoshop and differing from PSD format by allowing work with very large images exceeding 30,000 pixels in resolution, has been added. When importing PSD\/PSB, recognition and conversion of the application of non-destructive filters Drop Shadow and Inner Shadow is ensured.\n
The ability to upload presets for curves and levels used in Photoshop filters and to use them in GIMP filters has been added.
