The release of Linux Mint 22.2 has been announced, continuing the development based on the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS package base. The distribution is fully compatible with Ubuntu but significantly differs in its approach to user interface organization and the selection of default applications. The Linux Mint developers provide a desktop environment that aligns with traditional desktop organization standards, which is more familiar to users who do not adopt the new interface methods of GNOME 3. DVD images are available for download based on the MATE (3 GB), Cinnamon (3 GB), and Xfce (3 GB) environments. The Linux Mint 22 branch is classified as a Long Term Support (LTS) release, with updates scheduled until 2029. <\/p>\n
Key changes in Linux Mint 22.2: <\/p>\n

A new application, Fingwit, has been added for fingerprint authentication setup. This program detects the presence of a fingerprint scanner, allows the recording of user fingerprints, and optionally activates their use for system login, unlocking the screen saver, performing privileged operations via pkexec, and executing commands using the sudo utility.

Compatibility has been improved with applications using the libAdwaita library. A modified version of libAdwaita has been included, which works correctly with the Mint-Y, Mint-X, and Mint-L themes used in Linux Mint.

The package xdg-desktop-portal-xapp, which contains components for desktop integration of isolated libAdwaita applications (for example, those delivered in flatpak packages), has added support for accent colors used to highlight active elements. The values of such colors are determined by scanning GTK themes for the color with the identifier 'accent_color'.

The libAdapta library has been introduced, created as a fork of libAdwaita, supporting themes. Applications built with libAdapta, when launched in desktop environments that support theme selection, pick up theme settings and utilize the corresponding interface elements. The library uses a different set of style files, located in the libadapta-* subdirectory of the theme. If this subdirectory is absent, it falls back to the libAdwaita style set. For compatibility with libAdwaita, a separate header file is provided, allowing easy switching between libAdwaita and libAdapta without changes to the code.\n
The login screen has been upgraded \u2014 during the display of the panel and in the dialog, a blur effect is used. Users are given the option to assign a picture with an avatar.

The Sticky note-taking application has added support for the Wayland protocol and implemented rounded corners in the interface. A D-Bus method for reloading notes has been introduced. A mobile version of the application for the Android platform has been prepared.

The capabilities of the Hypnotix IPTV player have been expanded, with the addition of two additional display modes \u2014 'theatrical' and 'borderless', in addition to full screen output. In 'theatrical' mode, the content is displayed in a window with a title but without control elements and menus. In 'borderless' mode, the title and window borders are additionally hidden (to capture the window with the mouse, hold the Alt key). The new version also features faster application launch, optimized search functions in large playlists, elimination of volume reset when changing channels, and blocking screen saver activation during playback.

The capabilities of applications built on the xapp library have been expanded, providing a layer over GTK with elements to unify operation across different user environments (Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce). XApps use modern technologies (GTK3 for HiDPI support, gsettings, etc.), while retaining traditional interface elements such as toolbars and menus. Among such applications are: the Xed text editor, Pix photo manager, Xreader document viewer, and Xviewer image viewer.\n

Xviewer now features the ability to adjust color correction based on monitor parameters provided through EDID.\n
An xapp-aiff-thumbnailer application has been added to generate thumbnails with cover images embedded in AIFF audio files.\n
A port of the Warpinator application (encrypted file exchange between two computers) has been proposed for the iOS platform.\n
It is now possible to edit the description field of the web application in WebApp Manager.\n
The file renaming utility has added the option to prepend a leading zero to the sequential number in the file name. Additionally, support for setting the starting value and step increment of the counter has been included. The last renaming operation is remembered.

Changes have been made to the themes, where a gray color with a blue tint has replaced the pure gray, giving interface elements a more metallic and modern appearance.

The main screen of the Software Manager has been improved. A tooltip describing the differences between system packages and Flatpak packages has been added.

In situations where a system reboot is required after an update, a special reboot button is now displayed.\n
The accuracy of search in the main menu of the MATE desktop environment has been improved.\n
The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.14. Issues are noted with VirtualBox and old Intel and NVIDIA GPUs when using this kernel, and it is recommended to first install Linux Mint 22.1 with kernel 6.8, and then upgrade the system to version 22.2 without switching to kernel 6.14.\n
As in the previous release, versions of the Cinnamon 6.4, MATE 1.28, and Xfce 4.20 desktop environments continue to be delivered.
