Among the most noticeable changes are: improved Btrfs performance, system calls file_getattr() and file_setattr(), unification of single- and multi-processor configurations in the task scheduler, the DAMON_STAT module with memory access statistics, support for live patches on ARM64 systems, sending core dumps over the AF_UNIX socket, limiting SCHED_EXT via cgroup, simplified configuration for protecting against CPU vulnerabilities, Clang builds with stack variable initialization, protection against /proc spoofing, expansion of the RV (Runtime Verification) subsystem, limiting AF_UNIX sockets via AppArmor, and the TCP overload control algorithm DualPI2.

The new version includes 14,334 fixes from 2,118 developers, with a patch size of 46 MB (changes affected 12,841 files, adding 646,654 lines of code and removing 398,782 lines). The previous release had 15,924 fixes from 2,145 developers, with a patch size of 50 MB. Approximately 43% of all changes in 6.17 are related to device drivers, about 12% pertain to updates specific to hardware architectures, 14% are related to the network stack, 4% involve file systems, and 3% are with internal kernel subsystems.

Key innovations in kernel 6.17 (1, 2, 3):

Disk subsystem, input/output, and file systems

Btrfs has added experimental support for large folios of memory pages, which reduces overhead and improves performance for a range of operations. Caching requests to the bitmaps for free space distribution has been implemented, increasing the performance of creating empty files by 20%. Preemptive reading improvements have been made in systems using data compression. A denser key placement in the XArray structure ensures better compactness in the storage of extent tree nodes, reducing the number of leaf nodes by 50-70%. Additional settings for using compression in defragmented extents have been provided.

The ext4 filesystem now supports buffered I/O with the RWF_DONTCACHE flag, which removes data from the page cache immediately after the operation is completed.

In the EROFS filesystem, support for metadata compression has been implemented.

The NFS server can now delegate write operations to clients that open files in write-only mode.

The system call fallocate() has been updated with the FALLOC_FL_WRITE_ZEROES flag, allowing a specified range in a file to be zeroed out using the WRITE_ZERO command supported by some SSDs, which performs zeroing without input/output operations. This option is currently available only in the ext4 filesystem.

The system calls file_getattr() and file_setattr() have been added for manipulating the inode attributes of a specified file.

The 'pktcdvd' driver for working with optical media in packet mode, which was deprecated in 2016, has been removed.

The Bcachefs filesystem in the Linux kernel has been moved to external maintenance mode, meaning that changes to Bcachefs will not be accepted into the main kernel tree while this filesystem remains in the kernel's codebase. Development of Bcachefs will occur outside the kernel codebase until Kent Overstreet demonstrates the ability to properly interact with other kernel developers and adhere to established development rules.

Memory and system services

Support for uniprocessor configurations has been removed from the task scheduler. Systems with a single processor should now use kernels compiled for multiprocessor systems (SMP). The code for uniprocessor and multiprocessor systems has been unified and stripped of unnecessary ties to the CONFIG_SMP kernel parameter.

A new kernel module DAMON_STAT (Data Access Monitoring Results Stat) has been added, allowing monitoring of memory access using the DAMON (Data Access MONitor) subsystem. The module provides statistics on memory inactivity (memory_idle_ms_percentiles) and estimated memory bandwidth (estimated_memory_bandwidth).

Support for Live patches has been implemented on ARM64 architecture systems, enabling the application of fixes to the Linux kernel on the fly, without rebooting or stopping the system.

Support for the SuperH, x32, MIPS n32, and MIPS n34 architectures has been implemented in the minimalist C library nolibc, included in the Linux kernel source code and providing a wrapper over basic system calls.

The ability to send core dump contents over the AF_UNIX socket has been expanded, allowing for the creation of more secure user space core dump handlers that are not tied to the kernel calling privileged processes. A new protocol for creation has been added in this version. servers, capable of managing core dump processing at the individual task level. For instance, some processes can ignore core dumps while others can transmit them via a socket. A prototype server has been prepared for managing core dumps.

A kernel command line option 'crashkernel=size, cma' has been added for reserving memory through CMA (Contiguous Memory Allocator) for preserving the kernel crash dump.

The pidfd mechanism has been enhanced to allow the use of identifiers associated with specific processes that are not reassignable, unlike pid. It now includes the ability to bind extended attributes from user space to pidfd. File descriptors for pidfd can be opened via the open_by_handle_at() function without binding to the file system. Internal information created by the kernel along with the pidfd is now tied to the process rather than the pidfd and is preserved between reopening the same process.

A new function bpf_cgroup_read_xattr() has been added to the BPF subsystem for reading extended file attributes. BPF programs can now use typical string operations such as bpf_strcmp, bpf_strnchr, bpf_strchrnul, bpf_strlen, and bpf_strspn, which operate in read-only mode. It is now possible to use standard stdout and stderr streams for interaction with user-space components. For LoongArch architecture-based systems, dynamic code modification in BPF has been implemented, along with the 'BPF trampoline' mechanism (which reduces overhead when transferring calls between the kernel and BPF programs) and the execution of programs that use struct_ops to create kernel function handlers via BPF.

The timekeeping system has implemented support for auxiliary clocks that are not tied to the regular system clocks and run at their own pace (previously all clocks ran at the same pace and differed only by offset).

Initial support for Proxy Execution has been added to mitigate priority inversion issues. Proxy execution allows a task waiting for a lock to transfer its execution context to the task holding the lock, facilitating a faster release of that lock.

Changes from the Rust-for-Linux branch continue to be integrated, concerning the use of the Rust language as a secondary language for developing drivers and kernel modules (Rust support is not enabled by default and does not lead to Rust being included as a mandatory build dependency for the kernel). Abstractions for managing voltage and current regulators, firmware properties, input/output resources, and input/output memory have been added. The 'warn_on!()' macro has been implemented. A 'UserPtr' type has been added for user-space pointers. The functionality of workqueue, uaccess, dma, time, and list modules has been expanded. A 'bits' module has been added with 'bit' and 'genmask' functions.

Refactored the code for computing CRC checksums and added new calls for generating SHA-1 and SHA-2 hashes. Added architecture-specific optimizations. Improved the performance of the crc32c() function on the new x86_64 CPUs that support the VPCLMULQDQ extension (Vector Carry-Less Multiplication of Quadwords).

Implemented support for paging out to swap space and migrating huge memory pages (transparent huge page) for S390 systems.

The ability to configure the aggressiveness of memory page reclamation (proactive-reclaim) when it is lacking has been added, linked to specific NUMA nodes, allowing the allocation of NUMA nodes for which more active memory reclamation will be applied. For example, echo "512M swappiness=10" > /sys/devices/system/node/node1/reclaim.

In the SCHED_EXT mechanism, which allows using BPF to create CPU schedulers, the ability to manage bandwidth through cgroups has been added. For example, the cpu.max parameter can be used to limit CPU load.

The automatic mounting of the tracefs virtual filesystem in the /sys/kernel/debug/tracing directory has been deprecated, and /sys/kernel/tracing should be used instead.

Virtualization and Security

The ability to enable Protection against vulnerabilities in the CPU by selecting blocked attack vectors. Instead of specifying specific vulnerabilities in the settings, blocking methods are chosen based on the type of isolation violation: between the user and the kernel (user-kernel), between users (user-user), between the guest system and the host environment (guest-host), between different guest systems (guest-guest), and between different threads (cross-thread). The proposed approach allows for the activation of protection only against those classes of vulnerabilities that are of real concern to the user. For instance, cloud environment owners can enable guest-host and guest-guest modes, after which protection methods against vulnerabilities such as BHI, GD, L1TF, MDS, MMIO, Retbleed, RFDS, Spectre_v2, SRBDS, SRSO, and TAA will be activated.

Support for building with the Clang compiler has been added, including a stack depth tracking mode, which initializes all stored stack variables. This initialization is done to prevent information leakage from the kernel through uninitialized variables that may contain remnants of previously saved stack data. Prior to this, a similar capability was supported using the GCC plugin STACKLEAK.

Protection against attackers masquerading the file system /proc by mounting it in bind mode has been added. The inode number of the root /proc is now fixed (PROCFS_ROOT_INO) and can be checked by a user-space process.

The RV (Runtime Verification) subsystem, designed for the verification of high-reliability systems, has added the rtapp (Real-time application monitor) component for tracking common issues in applications operating in real-time mode, along with components rp, sssw, and opid for testing the task scheduler. The ability to create monitoring components that use linear temporal logic instead of a deterministic automaton for behavior modeling has been implemented. Verification is performed at runtime by attaching handlers to tracing points, which compare the actual execution flow to a predefined reference model that defines the expected system behavior.

Support for access control to AF_UNIX sockets has been added to the AppArmor system.

Support for the GICv5 interrupt controller has been implemented in the KVM hypervisor on ARM systems.

The CONFIG_KVM_IOAPIC setting has been added, allowing the disabling of APIC, PIC, and PIT emulation support in KVM.

Protection against the VMSCAPE vulnerability has been added.

The ioctl command FS_IOC_GETLBMD_CAP has been added to retrieve information about integrity protection measures applied to a file from user space.

The interface /sys/fs/selinux/user has been declared deprecated, and accessing it will now introduce a five-second delay and log a warning.

Network subsystem

Support for configurable power budget assessment strategies has been added to the PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment) technology, used for powering devices like IP cameras and wireless access points over Ethernet. Such strategies determine which ports should be disabled first to prevent overload.

Support for routing packets to external nodes through intermediate nodes (gateway-routing) has been added to the MCTP (Management Component Transport Protocol) implementation. The following rules allow routing packets to a node with ID 10 (Endpoint ID 10) through the device mctpi2c0, using the address 0x1d, directly attached to the node with ID 9. mctp route add 9 via mctpi2c0 mctp neigh add 9 dev mctpi2c0 lladdr 0x1d mctp route add 10 gw 9

The SO_INC option has been implemented for UNIX sockets (AF_UNIX), and the SIOCINQ option for the VSOCK address family. These implemented options are similar to the TCP_INQ option for TCP and allow control messages to retrieve information on the number of bytes available for reading in the socket.

Strict compliance with the declared receive window size has been enabled for TCP, defining the amount of data allowed to be sent before receiving an ACK confirmation from the other side. Previously, the kernel continued to process data exceeding the declared receive window, but it will no longer do so.

The ability to use the TCP_MAXSEG socket option to limit the maximum size of sent segments has been added to MPTCP (Multipath TCP). MPTCP is an extension of the TCP protocol to deliver packets simultaneously over multiple routes via different network interfaces tied to different IP addresses.

Support has been added for the TCP congestion control algorithm DualPI2 (RFC 9332), which allows the use of scalable congestion controllers for traffic with high quality of service requirements (e.g., TCP-Prague and DCTCP), without degrading the performance of traditional traffic, for which congestion controllers like Reno and Cubic are used.

A sysctl 'force_forwarding' has been added, allowing traffic redirection on selected network interfaces with IPv6.

Support for the Selective Acknowledgment (SACK) packet loss detection algorithm, described in RFC 6675, has been removed. This algorithm was deprecated in 2018. It is recommended to use the RACK-TLP algorithm for detecting TCP packet loss.

Hardware

Work continues on the Direct Rendering Manager (drm) driver Xe for GPUs based on the Intel Xe architecture, which is used in Intel Arc family graphics cards and integrated graphics starting with Tiger Lake processors. The new version includes by default support for chips based on the Panther Lake microarchitecture and added support for the WildCat Lake microarchitecture.

The AMDGPU driver for GPU GFX9.x has implemented support for the Cleaner Shader mechanism, which clears GPU memory before it is reused to prevent data leakage left after another process. Standby mode support has been improved. The ability to enter sleep mode in environments with AMD SR-IOV has been added. Backlight management has been enhanced.

Support for the drm_panic mechanism has been implemented in the i915 driver, which displays a version of the 'blue screen of death' during failures. Support for the display controller used in Wildcat Lake family chips has been added.

Integration of the Nova driver components for NVIDIA GPUs equipped with GSP firmware, used since the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2000 series based on the Turing microarchitecture, continues. The driver is written in Rust. The new version has added an abstraction layer for DMA handling, implemented a VBIOS parser, added code for framebuffer setup, and ensured support for fast boot in Falcon mode.

Support has been added in the adreno driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs x1-45 and x1-85.

The msm driver has added support for the Adreno SM8750 GPU and video memory mapping (VM_BIND).

Support has been added in the panfrost driver for Mali GPUs used in the Mediatek mt8370 SoC.

The lima driver now includes support for GPUs used in the Rockchip RK3528 SoC.

A mtd (Memory Technology Devices) driver has been added for accessing the NVM memory integrated into Intel GPUs.

Support for ASoC audio systems IMX WM8524, AMD ACP7.2, SoundWire ACP 7.1, Fairphone 4 & 5, Qualcomm QCS8275, Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen AI 300), CS35L41 HDA (used in ASUS laptops), Richtek RTQ9124, TI TAS5753, HP EliteBook x360 830 G6, EliteBook 830 G6, LG 16Z90R-A, HP 15-fc000 has been added. The HD-audio code has been reorganized.

Support has been added for ARM platforms, SoCs, and devices: NVIDIA Tegra264, Marvell PXA1908 (the first 64-bit chip from Marvell for smartphones), CIX P1, Axiado AX3000, Sophgo SG2000 (which combines ARM and RISC-V cores), Mediatek mt6572, exynos2200 (used in Samsung Galaxy S22), Renesas R-Car V4M-7, TI am62d2 and Sophgo sg2042, laptops based on Mediatek mt8186 and Qualcomm Snapdragon X1, smartphones and tablets based on SoC mt6572, tegra30 and msm8976.

At the same time, the Latin American Free Software Foundation has formed a completely free variant of kernel 6.17 — Linux-libre 6.17-gnu, cleansed of firmware and driver elements containing non-free components or code sections restricted by the manufacturer. The 6.17 release features an updated cleaning code for blobs in the amdgpu, prueth, iwlwifi, btusb, pci mhi host, adreno a6xx, nova-core, and Intel AVS drivers. The names of blobs in dts files (devicetree) for ARM chips and Intel IPU7 have been cleaned. Blob loading in new pci hda drivers has been neutralized. Cleaning of blobs in the QLogic infiniband driver, removed from the kernel, has been discontinued.

Source: <a content="nofollow" rel="nofollow"
