The GrapheneOS project, which develops an alternative free firmware for Android aimed at enhancing security and ensuring privacy, reported that Google has made changes to its vulnerability patch publication policy for the Android platform and the disclosure of vulnerability information. The October vulnerability report for Android was published empty. <\/p>\n

From now on, Google will initially provide security patches for Android exclusively to OEM manufacturers through closed channels with a non-disclosure agreement, requiring them not to disclose the source code using the provided patches for a period of 3 months from receipt. During this time, only binary builds with the patch included can be distributed. <\/p>\n

The code remains under the open Apache license, but the right to distribute it is subject to a temporary restriction through a non-disclosure agreement. The motivation behind this policy change is the company's 'commitment to heightened security,' noted as an attempt to implement the principle of 'Security through obscurity.' <\/p>\n

Despite the challenges this poses for open third-party firmware, the GrapheneOS project has found a way out by partnering with an OEM provider that is supplying embargoed patches to the project before their official disclosure. <\/p>\n

It has been noted that GrapheneOS will now provide two different release channels \u2014 one with fully reproducible builds at the time of publication based on AOSP, but without closed security fixes, and another with builds that include patches, the reproducible source code of which will be published only after the embargo expires.
