Two years after the last release, an alternative version of the Linux Mint distribution has been published \u2014 Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 (LMDE), which is based on the Debian package base (the classic Linux Mint is built on the Ubuntu package base). The distribution is available as installation ISO images (3 GB) with the Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment.

\"Release<\/center> <\/p>\n

LMDE is aimed at technically savvy users and provides newer package versions. The goal of developing LMDE is to ensure that Linux Mint can continue to exist in the same form even if the development of Ubuntu ceases. Additionally, LMDE helps verify the applications developed by the project for their proper functioning in systems different from Ubuntu. For upgrading from the LMDE 6 branch, the mintupgrade utility is available, which can simply be installed from the repository and run with root privileges.

LMDE includes most of the improvements from the classic release of Linux Mint 22.2, as well as original developments from the project (application manager, update installation system, configurators, menu, interface, text editor Xed, photo manager Pix, document viewer Xreader, image viewer Xviewer). The distribution is fully compatible with Debian GNU\/Linux 13 but is not package-compatible with Ubuntu and classic releases of Linux Mint. The system environment corresponds to the composition of Debian GNU\/Linux 13 (Linux kernel 6.12, systemd 257, GCC 14).
