The developers of the Xubuntu project have published a report on the website breach that occurred a month ago, during which a link to the archive «Xubuntu-Safe-Download.zip» containing malicious code was placed on the distribution's download page. Inside the archive, disguised as the Xubuntu installer, an executable file for the Windows platform was distributed, which, when used, installed malware that analyzed clipboard data and modified cryptocurrency wallet addresses. <\/p>\n

The investigation of the incident revealed that access to the site was gained through an attack on a vulnerable component for the WordPress platform, for which Canonical was responsible. After gaining access, the attackers were able to inject their code into the platform, altering the links on the download page and placing the file «https:\/\/xubuntu.org\/wp-content\/Xubuntu-Safe-Download.zip». <\/p>\n

The first reports of the compromise date back to October 15. It was noted that the Canonical teams responsible for maintaining the infrastructure were informed shortly after receiving complaints, after which they immediately began an investigation and disabled the download page (note: despite the statement that the work on the incident analysis began almost immediately, the malicious file actually remained on the download page until the evening of October 19). <\/p>\n

On November 11, Canonical provided the developers of Xubuntu with a report confirming the vulnerability's elimination, changes made to enhance security, and the resumption of the download page in read-only mode. To prevent similar incidents in the future, it was decided to replace WordPress content management system<\/a> with the static site generator Hugo, which will host only static content on the site. <\/p>\n

It is claimed that the attack was limited to just changing the link on the Xubuntu.org website and did not affect other elements of the infrastructure. In particular, the attack did not impact the build system, the cdimages.ubuntu.com service, mirrors, package repositories, and other development elements of Xubuntu. Users who downloaded the archive Xubuntu-Safe-Download.zip and executed the contained exe file should consider their systems compromised and use antivirus software to cleanse their systems of malware.
