The GrapheneOS project, which develops an alternative free firmware based on Android aimed at enhancing security and ensuring privacy, has faced threats of prosecution from law enforcement authorities in France due to the inability to analyze the contents of smartphones belonging to arrested criminals. <\/p>\n
In a statement released by GrapheneOS representatives, it was mentioned that they received threats from French law enforcement, warning of server seizures and the arrest of developers if the project refused to cooperate and did not include a backdoor. As a result, it has been decided to leave France, discontinue services from the French provider OVH, and relocate servers to another country. The servers supporting the platforms Mastodon, Discourse, and Matrix will be moved to Canada, while the website will be transferred to the German provider Netcup. <\/p>\n
The project will no longer have developers working in France or attending conferences there. However, despite attempts to tarnish the project, the use of the GrapheneOS platform remains legal in France, and GrapheneOS services will continue to operate in the country. <\/p>\n
Law enforcement was unable to extract information from a smartphone seized during a raid on the suspected leader of a criminal group because the device used GrapheneOS firmware, which included the feature to reset decrypted sections containing user data to their original unencrypted state, as well as having the ability to set a destructive PIN code that deletes data. <\/p>\n
It is noted that after the GrapheneOS developers refused to add a backdoor to the firmware, a series of publications appeared in the French press attempting to create a negative image of the GrapheneOS project as a tool facilitating criminal activities. GrapheneOS representatives believe that attributing their project with assisting criminals is as ridiculous as considering knife manufacturers as accomplices to crimes. <\/p>\n
The claims that GrapheneOS is involved in selling and distributing systems for criminals on the dark web and specialized forums are also unfounded. GrapheneOS is a non-commercial entity that allows anyone concerned about their privacy to download the firmware.
