The international consortium OASIS, responsible for the development and promotion of open standards, has approved the final version of the OpenDocument 1.4 (ODF) specification as an OASIS standard. The next step will be to promote OpenDocument 1.4 as an international ISO\/IEC standard. The OpenDocument 1.4 format is supported in LibreOffice starting from the LibreOffice 25.2 release. <\/p>\n
ODF is an XML-based file format independent of applications and platforms, designed to store documents containing text, spreadsheets, diagrams, and graphical elements. The specifications also include requirements for reading, writing, and processing such documents in applications. The ODF standard is applicable for creating, editing, viewing, exchanging, and archiving documents that can be text documents, presentations, spreadsheets, raster graphics, vector drawings, diagrams, and other types of content. <\/p>\n
The most notable changes in OpenDocument 1.4 include: <\/p>\n

The range of objects for which complex backgrounds, such as color gradients and shading, can be used has been expanded.\n
Shapes, such as rectangles and flowcharts, are now allowed to embed tables, in addition to plain text and lists.\n
The ability to label decorative objects for them to be ignored by tools for people with disabilities, such as screen readers, has been added.\n
Expanded and clarified capabilities for text handling in languages with different writing directions (left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom).\n
Improved method for defining handles that determine the framework of complex shapes.\n
A more flexible method for defining the format of numbered labels in multi-level lists has been proposed.\n
In text documents: Objects can now be positioned relative to page margins. The ability to specify gutter spacing in page format has been added. Additional properties for more flexible control over object layering have been introduced.\n
In spreadsheets: The use of cell text color and background color as criteria in filters is now allowed. The EASTERSUNDAY function for calculating the date of Easter and related church holidays has been added.\n
The diagrams have increased flexibility in the placement of axis labels and allow for the specification of the logarithmic scale base.\n
When embedding formulas, all versions of the MathML formula language are permitted. <\/ul>\n

Part 2, describes the data packaging model in the ODF container; <\/li>\n
Part 3, describes the overall ODF scheme. <\/li>\n

Additionally, the start of alpha testing for the LibreOffice 26.2 office suite can be noted, with a release planned for February 2026.
