The codebase for the upcoming GNOME 50 release has incorporated a set of changes implementing configuration for managing the restoration of applications launched in a previous session. A switch has been added to the configurator, allowing the option to disable the saving of the list of running applications during session termination and their window restoration in the subsequent session.

In May, the old code for session saving was removed from the gnome-session manager, as it was incompatible with systemd-based session management components. The old implementation provided the ability to save the list of active applications before ending the session in the directory ~\/.config\/gnome-session\/saved-session and was controlled via the gconf parameter 'auto-save-session', but it did not work on systems with systemd. <\/p>\n

At the end of September, a new session saving system based on systemd was proposed for GNOME. Additionally, a GsmSessionSave object has been added to ensure the preservation of the state of individual applications. Besides saving window positions after application restoration, GNOME may also include logic for restoring states; for example, GNOME Calculator can restore the selected calculation mode (basic, advanced, for programmers) but does not restore the history of operations.
