GRUB supports a wide range of platforms, including standard PCs with BIOS, IEEE-1275 platforms (PowerPC/Sparc64-based hardware), EFI systems, RISC-V, Loongson, Itanium, ARM, ARM64, LoongArch, and ARCS (SGI) systems, and devices utilizing the free CoreBoot package. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the GPLv3 license.

Key innovations:

Added support for data integrity checks in LVM logical volumes (LVM LV), implemented using dm-integrity.

Support has been added for configurations using LVM cachevol to speed up access to slow disks through data caching on fast storage devices.

Support has been added for the EROFS (Extendable Read-Only File System), developed by Huawei for use on partitions accessible in read-only mode. The structure of EROFS has been significantly simplified by omitting certain areas of metadata during implementation, such as the free block bitmap. EROFS supports data storage in a compressed form but uses a different approach to storing compressed blocks, optimized for achieving high performance random access to data.

Support has been added for placing the GRUB environment variable block in the reserved area of the Btrfs filesystem header. Such variables may store information about the default boot partition being used.

Support has been added for launching EFI images of GRUB in NX (No Execute) mode, which prohibits execution of instructions in memory areas that are not specifically marked as executable.

Support for the Shim loader protocol has been added, used for verified loading of the shim layer to boot in UEFI Secure Boot mode.

Support has been added for loading Unified Kernel Images (UKI), which combine the handler for loading the kernel from UEFI (UEFI boot stub), the Linux kernel image, and the initial RAM disk (initrd) used for initial initialization prior to mounting the root filesystem. The UKI image is designed as a single executable file in PE format, which can be loaded using traditional bootloaders or directly invoked from UEFI firmware.

Support for the Universal Boot Loader Specification (BLS) format has been added, with the implementation of the blscfg command for parsing.

Support for the Argon2 password hashing scheme has been added.

Support for the "TPM2 key protector" mechanism has been added to automatically unlock the encrypted partition at boot, thanks to the storage of decryption information for the keys in the TPM (Trusted Platform Module).

Support for appended digital signatures (Appended Signature, used to attach signatures to Linux kernel modules without altering the file itself) during boot verification in Secure Boot mode on PowerPC systems has been added.

An option "--disable-cli" has been implemented to block the GRUB command line interface and prevent editing of menu items.

Support for dates outside the 1901-2038 range has been introduced.

Support for decompressing data compressed using the ZSTD algorithm has been added.

Transition to using the new version of the cryptographic library Libgcrypt 1.11.0 has been made (previously, Libgcrypt 1.5.3, released in 2013, was used).

Resolved accumulated vulnerabilities (1, 2).

Source: opennet.ru

После двух лет разработки представлен стабильный релиз модульного многоплатформенного менеджера загрузки GNU GRUB 2.14 (GRand Unified Bootloader).
