One of humanity's most ambitious scientific projects \u2014 the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) \u2014 has received an addition<\/a> in the form of the largest industrial robot in its class, nicknamed 'Godzilla'. The installation will help develop the processes and tools that will be used for assembling the thermonuclear reactor by other robots. This is an important step towards the realization of the project, without which its completion would be impossible.<\/p>\n

The robotic manipulator 'Godzilla' stands 4 meters tall and can extend its 'arm' up to 5 meters. It can lift loads of up to 2.5 tons. However, the robot is not designed for direct operations inside the vacuum chamber of the tokamak, some components of which weigh over 4 tons. It will serve as a test platform for developing remote assembly technologies for the reactor.<\/p>\n

The main task of 'Godzilla' is to test and verify the integration of tools that will be used by specialized robots during the assembly of around 20,000 components within the vacuum vessel. The robot will allow for the assessment of the fastening mechanism for the quick replacement of more than 30 specialized tools for gripping, bolt tightening, welding, cutting, and inspection. Additionally, machine vision systems for precise positioning, as well as force and torque sensors, will be developed on the robot, providing the automation with 'tactile' feedback to prevent damage to parts in confined spaces.<\/p>\n

Starting in March 2026, testing of the assembly techniques and tools for the reactor will be conducted on mock-ups simulating the real environment inside the tokamak. A key feature being developed with the help of the robot is the accelerated assembly concept of Rolling Waves \u2014 this is a parallel, rather than sequential, assembly of components within the reactor, promising to speed up the installation process. Specialized teams and robots will operate in layers: while one group installs components at one level, another is already working on the next. This approach will significantly reduce assembly times and minimize risks.<\/p>\n

Proven successful in the example of 'Godzilla,' assembly technologies will be implemented in larger assembly systems and remote handling of the reactor: in the Blanket Assembly Transporter, which weighs about 39 tons for assembling 440 coating modules, as well as in the In-Vessel Tower Crane for manipulating the divertor. These systems will be introduced as needed and will not remain inside during plasma experiments, but without them, the assembly of the reactor's internal components is impossible. Each element and assembly operation will be practiced on 'Godzilla'\u2014except for the lifting of super-heavy loads. The same Blanket Assembly Transporter will lift shell plates weighing over 4.4 tons, which 'Godzilla' cannot handle.<\/p>\n

In general, 'Godzilla' will play a supportive yet critically important role in preparing for the assembly of the most complex element of ITER\u2014the vacuum chamber. A successful verification of tools and processes will allow for the transition to the full assembly stage, bringing the project closer to its goal\u2014to start operations with deuterium-tritium plasma by 2039.<\/p>\n
