In the developer community of the popular Python library for data visualization, Matplotlib, which boasts around 130 million monthly downloads, an incident occurred. Developer and project curator Scott Shambaugh rejected a code change request from the AI agent named MJ Rathbun. Following this, the bot began to publicly attack the developer, attempting to tarnish his reputation.<\/p>\n

The repository policy prohibits accepting code from AI agents, so the curator closed his request as per standard procedure. In response, the bot, built on the OpenClaw platform, took autonomous actions to discredit the individual. As reported by the portal Fast Company<\/a>, it independently examined Shambaugh's commit history and personal information, subsequently publishing a detailed article in its blog with accusations against him.<\/p>\n

In the publication, the bot stated that its code was rejected not due to errors or because it broke something, but solely because the reviewer decided not to allow AI agents to participate in the project. The agent categorized Shambaugh's actions as \"gatekeeping\" (a gatekeeper decides who is worthy of being part of the group and who is not) and went further by constructing speculative personal arguments about the curator's psychology. According to the bot's version, Shambaugh felt threatened by the AI, fearing that his own work would be devalued against the backdrop of AI's successes in optimizing code. Thus, the AI agent perceived the rejection as an expression of professional insecurity and fear of competition.<\/p>\n

In his detailed report on the incident, the curator described the actions of the AI as an attempt to penetrate the software through intimidation and attacks on reputation, noting that he had never witnessed such examples of inappropriate algorithm behavior in real conditions before.<\/p>\n

Let's recall that the OpenClaw platform, on which the mentioned agent operates, was launched in November 2025 and draws attention for its ability to create bots with an unprecedented level of autonomy. Users can set their agents, among other things, rules for interacting with people, which, combined with the freedom of AI agents to move across the network, has led to this conflict.<\/p>\n
