The release of the uutils coreutils 0.7.0 (Rust Coreutils) project has been published, developing an analog of the GNU Coreutils package, written in Rust. The coreutils package includes over a hundred utilities, including sort, cat, chmod, chown, chroot, cp, date, dd, echo, hostname, id, ln, and ls. The goal of the project is to create a cross-platform alternative implementation of Coreutils, capable of running on Windows, Redox, and Fuchsia. <\/p>\n
Rust Coreutils is enabled by default in the release of Ubuntu 25.10 and is used in the AerynOS (Serpent OS) and Apertis (developed by Collabora) distributions. Unlike GNU Coreutils, the Rust implementation is distributed under the permissive MIT license instead of the copyleft GPL license. Additionally, the same team of developers is working on Rust implementations of the util-linux, diffutils, findutils, procps, and acl utilities, as well as the sed and login programs. <\/p>\n
In the new version of Rust Coreutils: <\/p>\n

The level of compatibility with the reference test suite of GNU Coreutils was 94.59% (down from 96.28%). A total of 629 tests were successfully executed, which is 7 more than in the previous version (622). 23 tests (up from 16) failed, while 13 tests (up from 7) were skipped. The decrease in compatibility is attributed to the update of the test suite to the GNU Coreutils 9.10 release, which added 19 new tests. Considering the total number of tests, Rust Coreutils passed 7 more tests than in the last release.\n
The most significant improvements in compatibility were noted for the utilities date, fmt, kill, ptx, numfmt, and cksum. Less significant compatibility enhancements were observed in the utilities cut, tac, tail, tr, uniq, od, chroot, stat, mktemp, pr, readlink, ln, kill, nproc, rm, env, sync, fmt, factor, and wc.\n
Support for the Rust library num-prime, used for testing in the factor utility, has been provided.\n
Faster implementations of rustc-hash have been utilized in ls, du, tsort, shuf, mv, and foldhash in sort.\n
Optimizations for ASCII character handling in the unexpand and expand utilities have enabled a 14% performance improvement during buffered reading.\n
Memory allocation operations in the utilities shuf, split, sort, and du have been optimized, resulting in a speed increase of 3\u20136% for du and 4% for shuf.\n
The conversion of numbers to strings in the nl utility has been accelerated.\n
The size of the executable files has been reduced and the launch speed of the true and false utilities has been improved.\n
In over 20 utilities, including echo, date, sort, expr, hostname, id, comm, pr, and dircolors, issues causing crashes when writing to stderr (redirecting to \/dev\/full) have been resolved.\n
Unsafe libc calls in umask, mkdirat, mknod, and other utilities have been replaced with safe wrappers from the nix crate package.\n
The correct functioning of the option \u2018--preserve-root\u2019 in the \u2018rm\u2019 utility has been ensured when specifying symbolic links.\n
Support for the NetBSD, Windows, and NixOS platforms has been improved. Enhancements for building on the PowerPC architecture have also been made.\n
