Meta* has announced the resumption of development of the jemalloc memory management library, which was archived last June. The jemalloc library offers an alternative implementation of malloc functions optimized to reduce fragmentation and work on multiprocessor systems. <\/p>\n
It is noted that Meta recognized the benefits of using jemalloc in its infrastructure and decided to resume work on the library's code to reduce maintenance costs, modernize the codebase, eliminate technical debt, and adapt the allocator for new types of workloads and current hardware. The development will continue as an open project, developed in collaboration with the community and welcoming contributions from external participants. <\/p>\n
The jemalloc library was developed by Jason Evans in 2005 for FreeBSD 7.0, after which it was ported to NetBSD and integrated into Firefox. In 2009, the author of jemalloc joined Facebook, where this library was used in internal projects. In 2017, Jason left Facebook, and development continued by the remaining team at Facebook. After the company was rebranded to Meta, priorities changed, development on the library stalled, focus turned only to internal needs, and the public codebase gradually degraded. Significant refactoring was required to keep the public library afloat, but Jason was not willing to spend his time on this work and therefore archived the repository 10 months ago. <\/p>\n
Among the plans that Facebook aims to implement after the project\u2019s revival are: <\/p>\n

Reducing accumulated technical debt, refactoring and cleaning up the codebase, enhancing the library to maintain efficiency, reliability, and ease of use.\n
Continuing the development of the HPA (Huge-Page Allocator) to optimize CPU resource consumption through more efficient use of large memory pages (transparent hugepages).\n
Making changes to enhance memory handling efficiency related to improved structure packaging, caching, and cleaning up released memory blocks.\n
Adding optimizations for the AArch64 (ARM64) architecture. <\/ul>\n
