After two years of development, the release of the LibreQoS 2.0 platform is now available. It is designed to ensure fair distribution of existing bandwidth among users and to reduce the negative effects caused by packet buffering (Bufferbloat) by network equipment. The platform can be used by providers or administrators of private networks to optimize traffic flows, maintain minimal latency, and allocate bandwidth according to priorities. The project code is written in C, JavaScript, Python, and Rust, and is distributed under the GPLv2 license. The platform is installed on server<\/a>, placed between the provider's edge router and the local network's core router. <\/p>\n

LibreQoS helps reduce latency and improve the reliability of interactive sessions, gaming, online learning platforms, VoIP traffic, and video calls under heavy network load, such as when some users are downloading movies in multiple streams or engaging in torrent activities (LibreQoS addresses the issue of video call stuttering when someone in the same network starts downloading 4K videos). The use of LibreQoS reduces the peak bandwidth available to an individual user but significantly decreases latency and fairly allocates resources among all data exchange participants. <\/p>\n

LibreQoS is based on the use of the CAKE (Common Applications Kept Enhanced) queue management system and the fq_codel (Fair Queuing Controlled Delay) packet scheduler, and it utilizes eBPF and XDP (Express Data Path) to perform handlers at the network driver level, allowing direct access to the DMA buffer of packets. The CAKE algorithm is designed to replace and simplify the complex hierarchy of queue processing disciplines, maximizing possible bandwidth and providing minimal latency even on the slowest communication channels with the provider and when operating on low-power devices. <\/p>\n

The project also provides tools to track delays between sending a request and receiving a response (RTT, round-trip time), associated with individual users, access points, and websites. A web interface has been developed for analyzing the state, allowing for a visual evaluation of network traffic, monitoring changes in load and delays, and identifying the most active users. Flexible hierarchical traffic limiting schemes can be created, and integration with UISP and Splynx for mapping topologies and clients is possible. <\/p>\n

The release of LibreQoS 2.0 is dedicated to Dave Taht, who sadly passed away a year ago at the age of 59. Dave led the development of LibreQoS and was a co-founder of the Bufferbloat project, creator of the CeroWrt distribution, and author of numerous RFCs related to network queue management. <\/p>\n
