Attackers managed to take over the maintainer's account and released two malicious NPM package versions of axios, which provides an HTTP client implementation for browsers and Node.js. The axios package sees over 100 million downloads per week and is a dependency for 174,000 other packages. The malicious modifications were integrated into releases Axios 1.14.1 and 0.30.4 through the substitution of a fake dependency plain-crypto-js 4.2.1, which contained code to download components that receive commands from the attackers' control server. The malicious releases were offered for download on March 31 for almost 3 hours \u2014 from 03:21 to 6:15 (MSK). <\/p>\n

The malicious versions were published on NPM directly using the credentials of the main maintainer of the axios project (\"jasonsaayman\") bypassing the standard mechanism for publishing new releases based on GitHub Actions. It is believed that the attackers intercepted the maintainer's NPM access token, after which they logged into the account and changed the email binding. The exact method of access token interception has not been specified. <\/p>\n

The executed malicious code was hosted in the package plain-crypto-js in the setup.js file, activated after the NPM package installation via the postinstall handler ('postinstall: \"node setup.js\"') and was used to download and install a trojan affecting systems running Windows, macOS, and Linux. To hide its presence after execution, the malicious component deleted the setup.js file and replaced package.json with a version without the postinstall hook. \"The <\/p>\n

On macOS, the malicious executable was downloaded as \"\\\/Library\\\/Caches\\\/com.apple.act.mond\", on Windows \u2014 \"\u2018%PROGRAMDATA%\\\\wt.exe\u2019\", on Linux \u2014 \"\\\/tmp\\\/ld.py\". After activation, on Linux and macOS, every 60 seconds it would connect to an external server<\/a> The malicious activity on Linux and macOS did not involve persistence after reboot and was aimed at quickly collecting sensitive data, passwords, tokens, and access keys. In Windows, a file '%PROGRAMDATA%\\system.bat' was created, which retrieved the malicious component from the attackers each time the system was logged into. <\/p>\n

Malicious activity on Linux and macOS did not intend to maintain persistence after a reboot and was aimed at quickly gathering confidential data, passwords, tokens, and access keys.
