The search engine and Q&A service Ask.com, formerly known as Ask Jeeves, has ceased operations. The holding company IAC, which owned the service, decided to shut down its search business. Ask Jeeves was launched in 1996 and provided answers to user questions posed in natural language, making it one of the forerunners of modern AI chatbots. For much of its history, the service remained in the shadow of Google.<\/p>\n

A farewell message appeared on the Ask.com website: \"As IAC continues to focus efforts on priority areas, we have decided to cease the search business, including Ask.com. After 25 years of answering questions from around the world, Ask.com officially shut down on May 1, 2026.\"<\/p>\n

IAC acquired Ask Jeeves in 2005 and quickly removed 'Jeeves' from the name. By 2010, the holding company had discontinued the search product and shifted to a Q&A format. That same year, IAC Chairman Barry Diller stated at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference that Ask.com was unable to compete with Google and was not considered in the holding's stock valuation. <\/p>\n

However, as the farewell page states, \"the spirit of Jeeves lives on.\" A week earlier, Udaff.com closed down, marking the exit of the polite Jeeves and the main \"rogue\" of the Runet from the internet almost simultaneously.<\/a><\/noindex> Udaff.com and the courteous Jeeves, along with the main 'scoundrel' of the Runet, left the internet almost simultaneously.<\/p>\n
