IBM engineer Jan Polenski has submitted the first patch set<\/a>, which adds the capability to build the kernel with Rust support for s390.<\/p>\n

Thus, s390 became the sixth architecture to be considered for including Rust in the main Linux kernel. The architectures x86_64, ARM, LoongArch, and RISC-V already have this support.<\/p>\n

s390 is a mainframe architecture whose history began in 1964 with the legendary IBM System\/360 line, and it remains one of the most demanded platforms for mission-critical enterprise workloads: banking transactions, airline ticket reservations, and government systems. Its key advantage is exceptional reliability. The main design goals of s390 are correctness, stability, security, and availability, even at the cost of performance.<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Currently, the patches are undergoing review, and given their minimal size, there is a high likelihood that they will be included in the upcoming Linux kernel update cycle v7.2.<\/p>\n

The only technical restriction<\/a> at this time is the requirement for a nightly version of the Rust compiler (rustc), as s390 relies on the -Zpacked-stack flag.<\/p>\n
