The release was published May 18, 2026.

<noindex><noindex>

TileOS is positioned as a ready Debian system for users who need a pre-configured environment based on Sway, River, Qtile, Niri, or MiracleWM, rather than a classic GNOME/KDE/Xfce desktop. On the project's website TileOS is described as a "Debian-based distribution with tiling window managers."

</noindex></noindex>

The core of TileOS 2.0 now lies on the package base Debian 13. By default, the standard Debian kernel is used with Secure Boot support, with the Liquorix kernel available separately, optimized for typical desktop workloads.

Key changes in TileOS 2.0:

Transition to Debian 13. The package base has been updated, moving the distribution to a new Debian branch and providing a fresher set of system components.

Standard Debian kernel by default. Instead of a separate custom kernel, the native Debian kernel with Secure Boot support is now used. For users who prioritize system responsiveness, there remains the option to install Liquorix.

sudo-rs instead of traditional sudo. The system now includes a version of sudo written in Rust by default. This is part of a broader trend to replace individual low-level utilities with implementations that have a safer memory handling model.

systemd-resolved instead of Dnsmasq. The system DNS resolver now uses systemd-resolved, while dhcpcd5 is utilized instead of isc-dhcp-client.

Added tileos-kernel-manager. This new utility is designed for installing and removing Linux kernels, so users do not have to deal with kernel package management manually.

TileOS Welcome has been introduced. This is a welcome application that runs at system startup. It helps with initial setup and introduces users to important information about the distribution.

Rofi has been replaced by Wofi. The application menu has been transitioned to Wofi; it is also used in the source selection interface when creating screenshots.

swaylock replaced by gtklock. Now the screen locker is a GTK-oriented solution.

Btrfs is now the default file system. During automatic disk partitioning, the installer now selects Btrfs, which works better with system snapshots and Timeshift.

Added support for installation on F2FS. The installer can now set up the system on a partition with the F2FS file system.

Timeshift has been added. The system includes an application for creating backups and system snapshots via Rsync or Btrfs snapshots.

KDE Connect has been added. The distribution comes with a pre-installed utility for linking the desktop system with mobile devices.

Firefox ESR has been replaced with the regular Firefox. Instead of the ESR branch, standard builds of Firefox from the official Mozilla repository are now used.

System scripts and Waybar have been improved. The developers claim optimization of system scripts, bug fixes, and configuration issues with the Waybar panel. Power-profiles-daemon has also been added for quick switching of power profiles.

Swaykbdd has been added. This component allows different keyboard layouts for different windows.

Video hardware acceleration has been improved. Components for Intel QuickSync Video have been pre-installed and support for hardware video acceleration has been enhanced.

Flatpak and Flathub are included by default. Flatpak has been added to the system with the Flathub repository connected, and GNOME Software has been pre-installed for application management.

Plymouth and GRUB have been refined. Boot splash and bootloader configuration have been improved.

SwayOSD is used for on-screen notifications. It displays system-level notifications, such as when changing volume or brightness.

Two new experimental editions have appeared in TileOS 2.0. Niri Edition utilizes the Niri compositor, written in Rust, offering an infinitely scrollable window layout. This edition is closely integrated with GNOME components, including the Nautilus file manager and the GNOME portal system. MiracleWM Edition is based on the MiracleWM compositor built on the Mir library; it implements Sway features and adds desktop effects typical of Hyprland and SwayFX.

The main environments have also been updated. Sway has been brought to version 1.11, highlighting improved support for Nvidia graphics cards, color management tools, including HDR image and video output, and rendering optimization. River has been updated to 0.3.12 with support for fractional scaling of the interface, a new window rules system, improvements for Nvidia, and new Wayland extensions. Qtile has been updated to 0.31, where Wayland support has been improved and stability issues have been fixed.

Editions are available on the project's website. Sway, River, experimental Qtile, experimental Niri and experimental Miracle. ISO images and checksums are published for each. The minimum system requirements are stated as a dual-core processor at 1.6 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 20 GB of disk space, and Intel or AMD graphics; Nvidia is officially unsupported despite some improvements in the used compositors.

Overall, TileOS 2.0 appears to be an attempt to create 'Debian for tiling window managers' as a ready-made product: with an installer, pre-configured Wayland environments, Flatpak, system snapshots, mobile integration, and a set of utilities that frees the user from having to manually assemble their own Sway/River/Niri setup after installing basic Debian.

Source: linux.org.ru

Опубликован стабильный выпуск TileOS 2.0 «Sauropod» — дистрибутива Linux на базе Debian, ориентированного на работу с тайловыми оконными менеджерами и Wayland-окружениями. Релиз был опубликован 18 мая 2026 года.
