The release of the uutils coreutils project 0.9.0 (Rust Coreutils) has been published, developing an alternative to the GNU Coreutils package, written in Rust. The coreutils package includes over a hundred utilities, including sort, cat, chmod, chown, chroot, cp, date, dd, echo, hostname, id, ln, and ls. The goal of the project is to create a cross-platform alternative implementation of Coreutils, capable of running on Windows, Redox, and Fuchsia platforms, among others. <\/p>\n
Rust Coreutils \nis utilized by default in the Ubuntu 25.10 release and partially in Ubuntu 26.04. Rust Coreutils is also used in the AerynOS (Serpent OS) and Apertis distributions (developed by Collabora). Unlike GNU Coreutils, the Rust implementation is licensed under the permissive MIT license instead of the copyleft GPL license. Additionally, the same development team is working on Rust-based analogs of the util-linux, diffutils, findutils, procps, and acl utility sets, as well as the sed and login programs.<\/p>\n

The compatibility level with the reference test suite of GNU Coreutils was 90.58% (down from 94.74%). A total of 625 tests were successfully completed, which is 5 fewer than in the previous version (630). 56 tests failed (up from 21), one test resulted in an error, and 8 tests were skipped (down from 14). The decrease in compatibility level is explained by the update of the test suite to the state of GNU Coreutils 9.11, which added 25 new tests.\n
A total of 44 vulnerabilities identified during an audit conducted by Zellic have been resolved. Most vulnerabilities were caused by behavior divergence from GNU coreutils or race conditions that allow data modification at a moment after information validity checks, but before operations are performed on it, for example, swapping a file with a symbolic link between the completion of verification and the start of the operation. In the context of using the cp, chmod, and mv utilities in system scripts run with root privileges, such vulnerabilities can allow arbitrary files to be copied or overwritten. To protect against race-condition vulnerabilities, the project employs the uucore::safe_copy module. Information about the vulnerabilities has been published in a separate announcement.\n
The translation of utilities to the crate package rustix continues instead of the crate package nix. The utilities id, tr, timeout, sort, wc, tail, cp, who, and factor have been migrated to rustix. \nCode cleanup has been carried out to remove unsafe operations from various utilities.<\/p>\n
The utilities cat, wc, head, tail, yes, cp, tee, and unexpand utilize input\/output handlers based on system calls splice(), tee(), and pipe(), which have accelerated performance by eliminating unnecessary data copying between buffers.\n
Improved compatibility with GNU Coreutils utilities numfmt, date, tr, cksum, factor, head, stat, and sort.\n
The utilities ln, dd, mktemp, and tty now support building in WebAssembly format and using the WASI (WebAssembly System Interface) interface.\n<\/li>\n
