The project is distributed under the license Apache 2.0 and is part of the Intel Rendering Toolkit. The v2.5.0 release was published on GitHub on June 2, 2026.

<noindex>

Open Image Denoise is designed to remove Monte Carlo noise characteristic of stochastic rendering methods, including path tracing. The library provides a C/C++ API and a set of neural network filters that can work with both color buffers and additional buffers such as albedo and normal, to better preserve image details.

</noindex>

The main change in version 2.5.0 is a significant performance optimization and reduction in memory consumption on Intel GPUs with XMX support and on processors with AMX-FP16. The developers did not provide specific acceleration numbers, but highlighted this separately as the first change in the release notes.

Key changes in Open Image Denoise 2.5.0

Acceleration on Intel GPUs with XMX.
The library has become faster and more memory-efficient on Intel graphics processors where matrix extensions XMX are available. This is important for interactive previews and final rendering, where noise suppression can be performed multiple times as samples accumulate.

Optimization for CPUs with AMX-FP16.
Performance has been improved on Intel processors with AMX-FP16 support. These instructions are used to accelerate matrix operations, which fits well with neural network noise suppression filters.

API for importing external semaphores from graphics APIs.
An interface has been added for importing external semaphores from Vulkan, Direct3D 12, and other graphics APIs. This is currently supported for CUDA devices in Windows and Linux, as well as for HIP devices in Windows; support for SYCL devices is promised in a future release.

Flag for external memory with dedicated allocation.
OIDN_EXTERNAL_MEMORY_TYPE_FLAG_DEDICATED has been added. It needs to be combined with the descriptor type flag when importing external memory allocated as dedicated allocation. This change is important for low-level integration of OIDN with engines and graphics APIs.

Fix for corrupted output on Apple M5 Pro/Max.
The issue in the Metal backend that caused corrupted results on Apple M5 Pro and M5 Max GPUs has been fixed.

Fix for crashes in Metal.
The failure related to excessive releasing of MTLDevice has been resolved. The error could occur after repeatedly creating and destroying devices.

Device detection fixes in Windows.
An issue was fixed that could cause device detection failures or crashes with certain outdated Intel integrated graphics drivers in Windows. This fix requires the build with oneAPI DPC++ Compiler 6.1.0.

Open Image Denoise supports CPU x86-64 with SSE4.1, ARM64, Intel Xe/Xe2/Xe3 GPUs, NVIDIA Turing/Ampere/Ada/Hopper/Blackwell, AMD RDNA 2/3/3.5/4, and Apple Silicon GPUs starting with M1. Up-to-date drivers are required for GPU backends, and for Apple GPUs, macOS Ventura or newer is necessary.

Open Image Denoise 2.5.0 — this is not a significant functional release for end-users, but rather an important infrastructure update: it works faster on new Intel hardware, integrates better with graphics APIs, and fixes several platform-specific issues in Metal and Windows.

Source: linux.org.ru
