Fedora Linux mail server administrators noticed issues with the Microsoft Outlook mail client after a distribution update. Diagnostics revealed that the new version of the IMAP\/POP3 server package Dovecot 2.4.3 had disabled authentication via IMAP and POP3 protocols with passwords transmitted in plain text during sessions without encryption by default. <\/p>\n
Outlook users had the option enabled to connect to the mail server using encryption, but the mail client continued to use network port 110 for POP3 despite this setting, instead of switching to port 995 used for TLS sessions with the POP3 server. It also did not use the STARTTLS extension to switch to a TLS session. Some older Outlook configurations ignored the TLS encryption flag when explicit port 110 was specified without warning and immediately sent USER and PASS commands in plain text.
