According to the release schedule for FreeBSD 15.1, the official release announcement took place on June 16, 2026, and support for FreeBSD 15.1 is declared until March 31, 2027.

</noindex></noindex>
<noindex>

FreeBSD 15.1 includes updates to the user environment, kernel, drivers, networking subsystem, ZFS, NFS, cloud images, and documentation. A brief overview of the release is also published on Phoronix, and the complete list of changes is available in the official release notes.

</noindex>

Key changes

Changes in pkgbase.
In systems installed with the packaged base system, OpenPAM has been moved to a separate FreeBSD-pam package, and Zstandard to the FreeBSD-zstd package. Additionally, the installworld and installkernel targets are now blocked on systems installed from packages to avoid desynchronization with the package base.

New default shell in images.
For root users in release images, the default shell has been changed from csh to sh. This simplifies the behavior of the system in minimal and automated environments.

Improvements to user utilities.
The find command now includes the -xattr and -xattrname flags for searching files by extended attributes. The bectl utility has received the -E option for creating an empty boot environment without cloning the current environment. The daemon now allows setting permission modes for the output file, which is useful for logging and log rotation.

Updates to third-party components.
The base system has updated OpenSSL to 3.5.6, OpenZFS to 2.4.2, libfido2 to 1.16.0, expat to 2.7.5, xz to 5.8.3, tcpdump to 4.99.6, libpcap to 1.10.6, zlib to 1.3.2, SQLite to 3.50.4, Unbound to 1.25.1, and zstd to 1.5.7.

Extended support for C23.
The libc has extended support for the C23 standard. In particular, the <stdbit.h> header, the memalignment(3) function, updates for <limits.h> and <stdint.h>, macros _WIDTH, char8_t, and other extensions have been added. Full support for C23 is expected in future FreeBSD releases.

New kernel features.
The infrastructure for choosing the CPU scheduler at boot via kern.sched has been added. The sched_ule scheduler is now designed as an instance of the scheduler, and both SCHED_ULE and SCHED_4BSD are included in GENERIC for amd64. This lays the foundation for more flexible scheduler selection in the future.

New system calls and APIs.
pdwait(2) and pdrfork(2) have been added, posix_spawn(3) capabilities have been expanded, and new functions pthread_tryjoin_np(3), tdestroy(3), strdupa(3), and strndupa(3) have been introduced. On AArch64, the memcpy, memmove, and memset functions can now utilize the hardware MOPS instructions if supported by the processor.

Improvements in Linux compatibility.
Support for the F_DUPFD_QUERY command has been added to the Linux compatibility layer for fcntl, which is used with kcmp(2) to check the equivalency of file descriptors in Linux containers.

Driver updates.
The ena driver has been updated to version 2.8.3 and has corrected an issue with the jumbo frame reception path, potentially significantly improving network performance on supported EC2 instances. The smartpqi driver has been updated to the new vendor version, adding support for new controllers and increasing the I/O buffer size limit for passthrough ioctl.

Support for new hardware.
Support for Intel E835 Ethernet adapters has been added in the ice driver, support for new Intel QAT 402xx in qat, and additional Intel CPU models have been included in hwpmc, including Alder Lake, Alder Lake-N, and Emerald Rapids.

Wi-Fi improvements.
The iwlwifi, rtw89, and rtw88 drivers are now based on code from Linux 7.0. This expands support for new Wi-Fi devices from Intel and Realtek and enhances stability. Support for iwx has been separately included in the kernel configuration for Intel AX210/AX211/AX411 adapters.

NVMe improvements.
The NVMe driver now supports BAR5 for Table BIR and PBA BIR. This enables FreeBSD to operate on Google Compute Engine C4 machines with NVMe controllers utilizing separate 32-bit BAR4 and BAR5 registers.

Changes in ZFS.
In ZFS, the minimum scrub/resilver intervals have been reduced, speeding up transaction group cycles on modern drives and potentially improving write performance under heavy load. Additionally, the zfs_arc_evict_batches_limit parameter has been added to reduce lock contention during data eviction from ARC.

Changes in NFS.
The NFS client better handles case-insensitive file systems like msdosfs exported over NFS. Support for diskless boot configurations with nfsuserd has been added for NFSv4, and both the NFSv4 client and server now support the archive attribute used by Windows NFSv4.1 clients.

Network changes.
ipfw has been enhanced to support searching through masked IP addresses in tables, allowing for the creation of more effective filtering rules. Divert sockets can now receive IPv6 packets, and ifconfig has gained support for RFC 7217 stable IPv6 address generation via the stableaddr flag.

Improvements in virtualization and hardware support.
bhyve now supports UNIX domain sockets for remote framebuffer, enabling the use of the graphical console of virtual machines in jails without network access. On amd64, support for LASS — Linear Address Space Separation has been added, a mechanism for isolating kernel and user mode address spaces.

Cloud images.
In VM and cloud images with a packaged base system, pkg is now installed, allowing the base system to be updated without manually installing the package manager from ports. For cloud images, a firstboot package updater has also been added, automatically applying base system updates on first boot.

Deprecated components.
The lpr printing utility set is declared deprecated and may be removed by FreeBSD 16.0; users are encouraged to transition to CUPS or LPRng from ports. The bsdlabel and fdisk utilities are scheduled for removal in FreeBSD 16.0, with gpart recommended as a replacement.

FreeBSD 15.1 appears as a typical release of the 15.x branch: without a radical architectural change, but with a notable set of improvements for servers, cloud environments, storage, Wi-Fi, and other modern hardware.

Source: linux.org.ru
