The project is an evolution of a previously open-source solution that the company showcased about a year ago as an alternative to traditional container platforms like Docker. Essentially, this is a CLI tool that allows users to create, run, and publish OCI-compliant containers, integrating seamlessly with macOS and featuring its own launch method.<\/p>\n

Since macOS does not support Linux containers directly, Apple employed a lightweight virtual machine approach. Each container runs inside an isolated Linux environment, effectively creating its own micro-system. This is somewhat similar to Microsoft's WSL.<\/p>\n

Unlike traditional containers, which are usually designed for a single process, this solution provides a more complete environment. Such a Linux space can run for extended periods, launch background services, and maintain state across sessions\u2014almost like a fully functional system within macOS.<\/p>\n

One of the key features is the tight integration with the system. The home folder of macOS is automatically accessible within the Linux environment. Therefore, code, repositories, and settings can be utilized simultaneously in both environments.<\/p>\n

This allows developers to write code in their preferred editor on macOS while compiling and running it in Linux without unnecessary switching.<\/p>\n

Various distributions are also supported\u2014from Ubuntu and Debian to Alpine, with each environment configurable separately.<\/p>\n

Apple has added management for container 'machines': they can be created, started, stopped, resources configured, and filesystem behavior selected. There is even support for more advanced scenarios, such as background services within the Linux environment.<\/p>\n

The only limitation for accessing such functionality is that advanced scenarios with nested virtualization require a Mac with an M3 processor or newer, as well as macOS 15 and a special kernel with support. Despite the introduction of this new tool, it does not replace Docker Desktop. Docker still has a stronger ecosystem, familiar development tools, a GUI, and extensive workflow support.<\/p>\n

Apple Container 1.0 is more of an attempt to offer a more 'native' way to work with the Linux environment on Mac \u2014 closer to the system, but not yet a universal replacement for familiar container platforms.<\/p>\n
