I present the first release of the IronTick metronome. This lightweight, precise, cross-platform metronome uses the Qt6 framework. It stands out by generating a continuous audio stream of clicks instead of playing separate clicks on a timer, as most other metronome programs do. Thanks to this approach, IronTick clicks much more stably and accurately, even under significant background load.<\/p>\n

    What problems does it solve<\/h2>\n

    I decided to develop this application because I encountered a serious problem with most existing software metronomes\u2014they often do not keep tempo accurately and miss clicks. The situation worsens on weak machines under heavy background load. When I investigated the reasons for this behavior, it turned out that the typical approach to implementing these metronomes is creating a timer that triggers playback of a short click sound. And that\u2019s the answer, because this all operates in a multitasking OS; timers in user processes do not guarantee real-time operation with acceptable accuracy for musicians. Periodically, the timer triggers significantly later than the required time.<\/p>\n

    This issue in IronTick is resolved very simply\u2014it synthesizes a continuous PCM stream of audio samples, in which click sounds are precisely placed at the necessary points. This stream is played continuously by the sound card, just like any audio stream, such as a song in an audio player. Doesn\u2019t your song in the player stutter periodically, regardless of what program is in the foreground and what the load is? Thus, a metronome working on this principle clicks as steadily as an audio player plays a track. For this, it doesn\u2019t need an inaccurate timer.<\/p>\n

    The second problem, which is less critical\u2014usually, it's inconvenient to change the tempo without putting the guitar down. Therefore, IronTick has out-of-the-box one-key keyboard control (exactly one key, no need to hold down \u2018chords\u2019) for essential functions. Also, a customizable step for increasing\/decreasing the tempo has been made. I use it like this\u2014I start practicing a passage at a slow tempo, for example, 120 bpm, and periodically press the J key to increase the bpm by 5 units. Then another 5, and so on. You can set any step. Pressing one button is easy without releasing the pick.<\/p>\n
