The Frame project is developing a new X server, entirely written in NASM assembly for the x86_64 architecture, designed to operate in Linux without external dependencies. Interaction with the Linux kernel, including DRM\/KMS and evdev interfaces, is done directly through system calls, without using libraries like libc, Mesa, and FreeType. The Frame code is distributed as public domain. Development is being assisted by the AI assistant Claude Code. <\/p>\n

The project's goal is to implement X11 protocol extensions sufficient for the operation of the CHasm desktop, developed by the same author and also written in assembly. The minimum requirement is stated to be support for launching standard X11 applications, including Firefox, VS Code, GIMP, and Inkscape. The planned X11 extensions include SHAPE, RENDER, XKB, COMPOSITE, DAMAGE, RANDR, MIT-SHM, XInput2, and XVideo. <\/p>\n

The development is divided into 14 stages. Currently, the project is at stage 7, where basic capabilities for launching a terminal and some X11 applications have been implemented. Stage 14 will be reached when all functionalities for full operation with Firefox are realized. At the current stage, the possibility of launching the basic CHasm desktop, GIMP, and Firefox (with limitations) is reported. <\/p>\n

Among the already implemented features are: receiving X11 requests via Unix socket, software rendering through the DRM\/KMS kernel subsystem, input processing via evdev, API for managing input, support for connecting multiple X11 clients, functions for creating and working with windows, pixel map operations, atomic operations, text selection for the clipboard, and X11 extensions SHAPE, RANDR, XKB, XInput2, and MIT-SHM. Vector rendering primitives, atomic video mode switching, clipboard management, keyboard layout switching, cursor control, and X11 extensions RENDER, DAMAGE, and COMPOSITE have not yet been implemented. <\/p>\n

The CHasm desktop environment consists of approximately 100,000 lines of code and includes assembly-written components: the tiled window manager Tile, the status panel Strip, the screen locker Bolt, the interactive shell Bare, and the terminal emulator Glass. The developed components replace a combination of gdm, X11 Server, i3, conky, wezterm, and zsh. <\/p>\n

The development is focused on minimizing energy consumption when used on a laptop. In standby mode, the Tile window manager and Glass terminal consume virtually no resources and activate only upon user action. Frame in idle mode uses nearly three times less CPU resources than X.Org Server. <\/p>\n

It is claimed that the environment based on Frame and CHasm is already stable enough for the author's daily work. When issues arise or something is missing, the author enlists Claude as needed to address the shortcomings. The author is also developing a set of console utilities named fe2o3, written in Rust and covering all his needs except for a web browser. The fe2o3 suite includes a dual-pane file manager, Pointer, a command interpreter, rush, a vim-like text editor, Scribe, an RSS reader, Gazette, an email client and messenger, Kastrup, a calendar scheduler, Tock, a configurator, Crush, and a document viewer, Viewer.
