The second preliminary release of the Xfwl4 composite server, which uses the Wayland protocol, has been announced. Xfwl4 is written in Rust using the Smithay library. The project does not overlap with the codebase of the xfwm4 window manager, but aims to implement all the functionality available in xfwm4, including the ability to use existing xfconf settings and the configuration interface, taking into account the specifics of using Wayland instead of X11. The functionality of Xfwl4 is intended to reach a level where the user can switch between Xfwl4 and xfwm4 without noticing any differences. <\/p>\n
Among the advanced features of Xfwl4, significant rework of the session launch logic, implementation of the Wayland protocol xdg-session-management, and support for launching X11 applications via XWayland are highlighted. Xfwl4 is built on top of the Smithay library, which provides implementations of nearly all official extensions of the Wayland protocol, as well as the wlroots and KDE protocols. The Xfwl4 code is distributed under the GPLv3 license (for comparison, the code of the xfwm4 window manager is distributed under GPLv2). <\/p>\n
Changes in the second preliminary version include bug fixes, improved compatibility with xfwm4, and the addition of missing functionality.
