A general vote has been announced among developers on the use of large language models and AI tools in the development of the distribution. Voting will be open until August 28. About a thousand developers, involved in maintaining packages and Debian infrastructure, have the right to vote. <\/p>\n
During the discussion of the originally proposed two options for voting, the final list was expanded to 8 items: <\/p>\n

Prohibit any use of AI tools in the work on packages developed by Debian projects, web resources, translations, documentation, and messages in official correspondence. The prohibition does not extend to upstream projects that use AI, the provision of AI-related packages, and acceptance of patches created in upstream projects with the help of AI.\n
Allow AI under the condition of adhering to certain requirements, such as explicit notification of the use of AI, full responsibility of participants for contributions made through AI, and the use of AI tools under unrestricted terms.\n
Reject AI as much as possible due to ethical, environmental, and social issues. Error messages and emails in mailing lists must be written only by humans. Any use of AI in the work process must be disclosed. Maintainers have the right to prohibit the use of AI for patch preparation in the subsystems they are responsible for. Violating the AI usage rules is equivalent to breaching the code of conduct.\n
The acceptability of using AI in performing tasks specific to Debian, with mandatory notation of AI use, taking full responsibility for the code, understanding the essence of changes, and prohibiting the processing of confidential data in cloud AI services.\n
Responsible Use of Generative AI \u2014 the use of AI is neither endorsed nor prohibited, and the same quality standards and licensing requirements apply to AI-generated code as to code written by hand. Disclosing the use of AI is encouraged but not mandatory. The use of third-party AI services for handling closed keys or analyzing vulnerabilities that have not yet been publicly disclosed is prohibited.\n
Cautious use of AI while acknowledging existing risks and recommending avoiding the application of AI in situations where it can be avoided. Utilizing established quality standards and being accountable for the code by the developers who passed it on. The accompanying individuals are authorized at their discretion to reject changes made through AI. Recommendation to disclose information about the use of AI. Prohibition on processing confidential data in cloud AI services.\n
Prohibition on using AI-generated results in transmitted patches, bug reports, and documentation. Permissibility of using AI as an auxiliary tool for code analysis and research, provided the final result is created by a human and meets project guidelines.\n
Condemnation of the use of AI without an outright ban due to its negative environmental impact. Encouragement to avoid AI tools in favor of manual work. Voluntary disclosure of facts regarding the use of AI. <\/ul>\n
