Amazon has announced the acquisition of DuckLabs, the developer of the open-source database DuckDB. The acquisition process was completed on August 31, and the deal amount has not been disclosed. The DuckDB development team will join AWS and continue working on DuckDB technologies under the guidance of DuckLabs' co-founders. <\/p>\n
The advancements of DuckDB are planned to be used to modernize, simplify, and enhance the efficiency of the analytical stack offered on the AWS platform. Amazon S3 is set to be transformed into a storage service with built-in data analysis capabilities. The DuckDB codebase will continue to evolve as an open project distributed under the MIT license and curated by the DuckDB Foundation, a non-profit organization. It is noted that joining AWS will expand DuckDB's user base and provide additional resources for implementing new ideas for scaling the database. <\/p>\n
DuckDB conceptually resembles SQLite and combines attributes such as compactness, embedding as a library, storing the database in a single file, and a CLI interface, with capabilities and optimizations for executing analytical queries that cover a significant portion of the stored data, such as aggregating all table content or merging multiple large tables. The database supports an extended dialect of SQL, which includes additional features for processing complex, long-running, and nested queries. <\/p>\n
