The stable version of the GNU Coreutils 9.12 basic system utilities is now available, which includes programs such as sort, cat, chmod, chown, chroot, cp, date, dd, echo, hostname, id, ln, and ls. <\/p>\n
Key innovations: <\/p>\n

The env utility has added the option «—env0-from=FILE» to load the list of environment variables being set from a file, which can also be used to filter existing environment variables with a command like «env -i —env0-from=<( env -0 | sed -z … )». The printenv utility can be used to save the state of environment variables to a file.\n
In the commands ‘env’, ‘printenv’, ‘stat’, ‘basename’, ‘dirname’, ‘du’, ‘readlink’, and ‘realpath’, the output to the terminal now uses escaping of special characters according to the style set by the environment variable QUOTING_STYLE (%N, %Qn, or %n). Escaping has been added to protect against content manipulation and terminal state change through special character substitution. <\/p>\n
In the utilities ‘df’, ‘du’, ‘ls’, ‘od’, ‘pr’, and ‘sort’, problematic options in error messages are now escaped.\n
In the command ‘ls -m’, commas in file names are now escaped.\n
The utilities ‘chcon’, ‘chgrp’, ‘chmod’, ‘chown’, ‘du’, and ‘ls’ no longer fail when recursively deleting files in processed directories using the «-R» option.\n
The sort utility has been optimized for memory consumption and for executing parallel operations when reading data of unknown size, such as when transferring data through unnamed pipes.\n
The detection of the start of a line in the ‘cut -w’ command has been optimized, resulting in up to a 4x increase in throughput when using locales with multibyte encodings.\n
The operation of the ‘uniq -c’ command has been accelerated by up to 2.5 times on systems with non-blocking stdio functions.\n
A build option ‘—with-wtmpdb’ has been added wherein the commands ‘who \/var\/log\/wtmp’ and ‘users \/var\/log\/wtmp’ utilize a database in the format wtmpdb instead of the file \/var\/log\/wtmp. <\/ul>\n
