The developers of the Kagi search engine have announced their decision to open the source code of the Orion browser editions for Linux and Windows platforms. Details regarding the future development model and licensing of Orion for these platforms are expected to be published within 30 days. There is a possibility of transferring the code to the care of a non-profit organization. <\/p>\n
The reason for revising their policy on code publication was the discontinuation of Orion development for Linux and Windows in favor of focusing solely on versions for macOS and iOS, as the small company Kagi was unable to manage the development of a complex cross-platform product and wishes to concentrate resources on just one browser variant. The statement indicated that the Orion developers invested significant time and effort in creating Linux and Windows versions, and believe that the project deserves continued development, but now without Kagi's involvement, and instead through the interested community.

The Orion browser is built on the WebKit engine and is notable for its default blocking of ads and tracking code, lack of telemetry collection and transmission, integration with Kagi search services, additional customization options for the interface and viewed pages, and support for installing extensions from Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. The browser also demonstrates more efficient memory release\u2014after closing tabs, Orion uses 3 times less memory compared to Safari, 2.5 times less compared to Chrome, and 2 times less compared to Firefox. <\/p>\n
In Orion, users can add custom buttons to the toolbar to call JavaScript code or execute available browser functions. It supports font changes, disabling pinned (non-scrolling) headers, forcibly applying dark mode for websites, as well as selective disabling of JavaScript, Cookies, and external fonts. There's also a mode for quickly removing HTML elements from pages through cursor selection, and an editing feature that allows for content changes before taking a screenshot or saving to disk. <\/p>\n
