The kernel provides an ABI (Application Binary Interface) compatible with the Linux kernel and can be used as a substitute. Concurrently, the Asterinas NixOS distribution is being developed, combining the Asterinas kernel with the NixOS system environment. The project has been in development since 2022 and is distributed under the MPL (Mozilla Public License).

Currently, the kernel implements over 240 Linux system calls. In the Asterinas NixOS distribution, more than 100 packages from NixOS have been verified to work on top of the Asterinas kernel. Supported packages include: Xfce, Firefox, bash, systemd, Podman, QEMU, rsync, Apache httpd, nginx, SQLite, Redis, Clang, GCC, Go, Lua, Node.js, OpenJDK, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Rust, Git, FFmpeg, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Ollama, and Codex.

The kernel provides full support for the x86-64 architecture, partial support for ARM64, RISC-V 64, and x86-64 with isolation based on Intel TDX, as well as initial support for the LoongArch 64 architecture. The priority use cases include systems tied to the Linux ABI but requiring a higher level of security. For example, Asterinas is recommended for creating system environments that are secure. of virtual machines, which utilizes technologies such as ARM CCA, AMD SEV, and Intel TDX, as well as on the host system side that supports container execution.

To reduce the likelihood of memory-related errors, which are the main source of the most dangerous vulnerabilities, the Asterinas kernel is developed using the Rust language and a strategy of limited use of unsafe blocks. The kernel is built using the framekernel architecture, attempting to combine the isolation capabilities of microkernels with the efficiency of monolithic kernels.

Core components in Asterinas are located in a shared address space, with security achieved through logical separation of secure code from code where security issues may arise. The kernel is divided into two parts, written in Rust: OS Framework and OS Services. Unsafe blocks are prohibited in OS Services, and all low-level operations requiring unsafe block execution are moved to the OS Framework, accessible only through a high-level API. All system calls, file systems, and drivers are implemented at the OS Services level and cannot include unsafe blocks.

For the development of system services and kernel modules, the OSDK (Operating System Development Kit) toolkit is provided, which includes the cargo-osdk utility for creating, building, testing, and running operating system components. A set of OSTD (Operating System Standard Library) libraries has been prepared for developers, including an edition of the Rust standard libraries (crate std) adapted for use in operating system components.

Among the changes in Asterinas 0.19:

The DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) subsystem has been implemented, along with the device /dev/dri, KMS (kernel mode setting) interface, and the 'modesetting' driver, allowing the standard graphics stack based on X.Org Server and Mesa to be launched instead of the previously used fbdev driver that utilized the framebuffer.

Support for the AArch64 (ARM64) architecture has been added, which is now the primary architecture for development, alongside x86-64. For AArch64, a second level of support has been implemented, indicating the functionality of the basic features, verification in a continuous integration system, and partial test coverage.

Work on adapting Asterinas for deployment as a guest system in VM containers Kata Containers and Confidential Containers has continued. A new implementation of Overlayfs has been proposed, successfully passing the standard Linux kernel FS test suites and xfstests. A new mounting API has been implemented. The virtio-fs code has been stabilized. Support for the protocol has been added.
direct-boot, used in QEMU, Cloud Hypervisor, and Firecracker. Booting speed has been accelerated in virtual machines, whose memory is encrypted using Intel TDX technology.

A basic API for creating minimalist hypervisors based on Intel VMX has been implemented in the OSTD (Operating System Standard Library) framework.

Support for a driver development model in Rust has been added. The aster-device component has been implemented with functionality similar to Linux kernel components, providing basic primitives and abstractions for driver development, but written in Rust without unsafe code.

The ability for self-hosting has been provided — from an environment with the Asterinas kernel and NixOS packages, it is now possible to build the Asterinas kernel.

Source: opennet.ru
