Google continues to enhance security methods for its browser. Today, there are numerous ways to spy on users through websites that interact with specific APIs. One of the methods that emerged a few years ago is the analysis of smartphone accelerometer data. This utilized an API for working with JavaScript. This method allowed, in particular, determining whether the user was in a car or a train, how long they remained still, or conversely, how often they walked. Additionally, gait recognition could unequivocally identify the user themselves.<\/p>\n

Therefore, Google is working to counteract this technology. Reports indicate that they are developing a method to block websites from accessing gyroscope, accelerometer, and light sensor data. This feature has appeared in the latest Chrome Canary build.<\/p>\n
By default, access to sensors is enabled, but now Chrome will notify users when a website attempts to access sensors. This will allow users to permit or deny access to such data. It is noted that on Android, you can currently block access to your motion data across all sites at once. That means there are currently no 'whitelisting' or 'blacklisting' features, though these may be introduced in the future.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that a study conducted by the University of Illinois confirmed that websites can indeed spy on users via smartphones. It has been noted that reading data from accelerometers and gyroscopes is necessary for website owners or advertisers. This allows for user recognition and targeted advertising.<\/p>\n
The new feature is expected to roll out in Chrome 75.<\/p>\n
