\nRecently, the Internet celebrated its 30th anniversary. Over this time, the information and digital needs of businesses have expanded to such an extent that we are no longer just talking about corporate servers or even the necessity of being located in a data center. Now, we discuss renting an entire network of data processing centers along with a range of accompanying services. This applies not only to global projects with big data (as giants have their own data centers) but also to medium-sized companies that frequently update their databases (for example, online stores) and services requiring high-speed data exchange (such as banks).

Why Does Business Need a Distributed Data Center System? <\/h2>\n

\nSuch a system consists of IT complexes that are geographically distributed based on the principle of an main data center and regional data centers. They are originally equipped considering the possible information flows and business processes of modern developing companies and ensure the continuity of these flows and processes.<\/p>\n

\u258dWhy Distributed? <\/h3>\n

\nFirstly, due to the risk of putting all your eggs in one basket. There is a growing demand for fault-tolerant solutions that can guarantee uninterrupted operation of corporate applications, services, and websites under any conditions. Even in the worst-case scenarios. Such computing infrastructures must not only preserve data effectively but also minimize downtime for IT services of the company (read: business) during Roskomnadzor lockdowns, natural disasters, technological catastrophes, and any other force majeure circumstances. It is no wonder these solutions are referred to as disaster recovery. <\/p>\n

For this, the sites of computing complexes serving the company must be located a safe distance apart according to a specific scheme (see the table and illustration below). If necessary, a disaster recovery plan (DR-Plan) is employed, along with the automatic transfer of customer services to another site in the network using fault-tolerant methods and software solutions tailored to each specific case (data replication, backup, and more).<\/p>\n

Secondly, to enhance performance. Under normal conditions (not in emergencies, but during peak loads), distributed data centers are designed to increase the company's performance and minimize information losses (for example, during DDoS attacks). This includes load balancing complexes among computing nodes: the load is redistributed evenly, and in the event of a failure of one of the nodes, its functions will be taken over by other nodes in the complex.<\/p>\n

Thirdly, for the effective operation of remote branches. For companies with many departments, centralized storage and processing solutions with geographically distributed replication are implemented. Each branch can operate with its volume of data, which will be consolidated into a single database at the central office. In turn, changes in the central database are reflected in the databases of the departments.<\/p>\n

\nGeographically distributed data centers are divided into four types. For external users, they appear as a single system: management occurs through a single service and support interface. <\/p>\n

\u258dGoals for which businesses need distributed data centers:<\/h3>\n

\nContinuity of data processing. Uninterrupted operation is required to address the inevitably arising technical issues without halting business processes, even in the event of failures in certain communication channels and significant portions of the system. The ability of the system to perform its functions within the planned time, considering the average safe operation time and recovery time (Recovery Time Objective<\/a><\/noindex>) defines the reliability level of the data center. There are four levels in total: TIER1, TIER2, TIER3, TIER4; the higher the indicator, the more reliable the center's equipment and the higher the standard of its infrastructure. <\/p>\n

Performance and capacity enhancement. When needed (peak loads) \u2014 the ability to scale up power and improve the efficiency of reserve data centers due to economies of scale: maximum utilization of computing resources across the entire distributed system. Scalability provides flexible computing capabilities on demand through dynamic configuration.<\/p>\n

Disaster resilience. This is ensured by reserving computing power at a remote site. The system's operability is achieved by configuring the recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) (the level of security and speed of recovery depend on the plan).<\/p>\n

Distributed services. The company's IT resources and services are decoupled from the underlying infrastructure and provided in a multi-tenant environment on demand and at the required scale.<\/p>\n

Geographic localization of services. To expand the brand's target audience and enter new geographic markets.<\/p>\n

Cost optimization. Creating and maintaining your own data center is quite expensive<\/a><\/noindex> . For most companies, especially large geographically distributed ones and those planning new market presence points, outsourcing IT infrastructure can lead to significant savings.<\/p>\n

Why it is beneficial for businesses to have a data center nearby<\/h2>\n

\nFor many modern services and business applications, access speed to the site can be critical. This speed primarily depends on the distance between the sites of the distributed data centers. If it is small, communications are simplified and performance is enhanced due to reduced signal latency. This is especially important for backup processes. In a fiber optic cable, the light propagation delay is approximately 5 ms\/km. Latency affects the execution time of input-output operations, which is about 5\u201310 ms. <\/p>\n

Since services must operate continuously, with a high level of availability and minimal downtime, it is advantageous for businesses to rent IT infrastructure geographically close to users in target markets.<\/p>\n

The access speed to the platform also depends on the hardware. For instance, in our new data center at the IT Park in Kazan, you can get an internet channel of 100 Mbps for your virtual server providing a very comfortable access. <\/p>\n

Businesses with a large international presence are well-advised to use foreign platforms for data hosting to save on traffic costs and reduce page response times for overseas users. A long response time is a cause of low ranking in Google search results.<\/a><\/noindex> And, more importantly, it's a reason for the target audience to leave your websites (a high bounce rate leading to the loss of leads).<\/p>\n

What are the advantages of backup data centers?<\/h2>\n

\nConsidering the often unstable situation in Russia regarding information security (for example, the recent massive blocking of IP addresses by Roskomnadzor, which affected even websites unrelated to Telegram), it is convenient to position part of your business's IT infrastructure outside the Russian legal field. For example, by renting servers in a Swiss data center, you fall under Swiss data protection laws, which are quite strict. Specifically: neither government structures of Switzerland (except for the government in special cases) nor law enforcement agencies from other countries have access to any information on 'Swiss' servers. Data cannot be requested from data centers and providers without the client's knowledge.<\/p>\n

Deploying a backup data center (or hosting) on a remote (foreign<\/a><\/noindex>) site is strategically justified, especially in the case of painless migration of business-critical services for their uninterrupted operation. <\/p>\n

A bit more about the Kazan data center.<\/h2>\n

\nSince we are talking about the data center in Kazan, let us take a moment for a small promotional block. The IT Park, which houses the data center, is the largest technology park in the high-tech sector of Tatarstan. This data center spans an area of one square kilometer with a TIER3 level and a capacity of 2.5 MW, able to accommodate more than 300 racks. <\/p>\n

\nAll technical rooms and server halls are equipped with a gas automatic fire suppression system with smoke detectors, allowing for the elimination of the fire source without damaging high-tech equipment. Energy-saving, cooling, and ventilation systems are implemented at the highest level, and key components of these systems are located in separate rooms.<\/p>\n

\nWe have commissioned our own hermetic zone in the IT Park data center. The data center has an SLA of 99.982%, fully meeting high international standards for operational resilience of data centers. It has licenses from FSTEC and the FSB, as well as a PCI-DSS certificate, allowing the placement of equipment for organizations dealing with personal data (banks and others).
