To be honest, the results of the Call for Papers exceeded all expectations. Yes, we understood that the topic is relevant; we saw this at other conferences and meetups, but we never could have imagined that it would reveal so many new facets and angles.

Overall, the Program Committee received 83 applications for presentations. As expected, more than twenty came in during the last day. We in the Program Committee were all trying to understand why this happens. Then one of us admitted that he often put it off until the last moment because it never occurred to him that, by the time the application period ends, work on many presentations — calls, discussions, getting feedback — has already been going on for a month or two; moreover, a significant part of the agenda may already be filled.

We understand that from the perspective of those submitting applications, it looks somewhat like the image below, but it’s not like that.

From the outside, it seems that after the deadline, everything just begins; that we, the Program Committee, have only just gathered and are starting to sort through applications, so processing one more isn't difficult. But in reality, we weren't sitting idly by. But that's merely a lyrical digression to share what the Call for Papers looks like from inside the committee; let’s return to the presentations.

83 is almost 3.5 presentations per slot in the program, and now we have the task of selecting the best and refining them to near perfection.
<noindex></noindex>

Trends in the submitted applications

The applications received allow us to get a rough idea of the trend — what is currently on everyone’s minds. This happens at every conference; for example, at TeamLeadConf, the top topics have been OKR, performance reviews, and developer evaluations for the past two years. At HighLoad++, there is consistent interest in Kubernetes and SRE. And our trends are roughly as follows.

We used the Gartner Hype Cycle methodology to position the topics on a graph, where the axes denote increasing visibility and trend maturity. The cycle highlights stages such as: 'technology launch', 'peak of inflated expectations', 'trough of disillusionment', 'slope of enlightenment', and 'plateau of productivity'.

In addition to trends, many applications emerged that go beyond knowledge management in IT, so let's clarify for the future that our conference is not about:

e-learning detached from the characteristics of adult professional education, employee motivation, and knowledge transfer processes;

documentation separated from knowledge management processes, as it is just one of the tools;

surveying and describing business processes and business logic as is, and other typical methods from the work of a systems analyst without linking to more complex cases of knowledge management about systems and processes.

KnowledgeConf 2019 will take place in three tracks — a total of 24 presentations, several meetups, and workshops.Next, I will discuss the applications already accepted into the program so that you can decide if you need to attend KnowledgeConf (of course you do).

All presentations, round tables, and master classes will be divided into 9 thematic blocks.:

Onboarding and adaptation of newcomers.

Knowledge management processes and the creation of a culture of exchange.

Internal and external training, motivation for knowledge exchange.

Personal knowledge management.

Knowledge bases.

Technologies and tools for knowledge management.

Training of knowledge management specialists.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of the knowledge management process.

Knowledge management systems.

We looked at the experience of other conferences and did not group presentations in the schedule thematically back to back, but rather we encourage participants to move between rooms, rather than becoming rooted in their seats for the track that interests them. This allows for context-switching, avoids material repetition, and prevents situations where half the audience stands up to chat with the speaker while the next one has to present to a still-empty room.

Knowledge management is about people and building processes, not just about platforms, tools, or creating a knowledge base, so we pay significant attention in the program and topics to motivation, building a culture of knowledge exchange, and communications..

Our speakers vary greatly: from young and daring team leaders of IT companies to representatives from large corporations; from specialists in major companies that have long established knowledge management systems to representatives from the academic and university environment.

Knowledge Management Systems

The conference will begin with a foundational <noindex>of the report</noindex> Alexei Sidorin from KROK. He will outline the current state of approaches and knowledge management systems, presenting a big picture of modern knowledge management, providing a framework for further understanding and setting the tone for the entire conference.

Complementing this topic <noindex>report</noindex> Vladimir Leshchenko from Roscosmos ‘How to Implement a Knowledge Management System in Business’, will allow us all to peek into the life of a large corporation, where effective knowledge management is a must-have. He worked on this for a long time at Rosatom, the corporation of knowledge, and is now working at Roscosmos. Alexander, in a form of a letter to his past self, will talk about the best approach to creating a complex service knowledge management system within the technical support team, what artifacts to create, and how to motivate employees to generate knowledge integrated into the adopted management system of the company.

Onboarding

A strong block of presentations on onboarding and adaptation of newcomers in technological and engineering teams is planned. Communication with participants of TeamLead Conf 2019, where our PC had its own stand, showed that it is exactly the scaling and establishment of this process under constantly changing conditions that concerns the audience the most.

Gleb Deikalo from Badoo, Alexandra Kulikova from Skyeng, and Alexey Petrov from Funcorp will discuss three different approaches to onboarding, varying in scale and application.

First Gleb Deikalo downward API support (simultaneously with this in <noindex>presentation</noindex> “Welcome Aboard: Integrating Developers into Teams” will talk about the onboarding framework developed by several team leads for their teams. They navigated a challenging path from a ‘collection of links’ and personal lectures to a semi-automated, effective, and structured procedure for integrating newcomers into projects and work tasks.

Then Alexandra Kulikova from Skyeng will focus on all the experience of the edtech company and <noindex>popular relocation destinations: from New Zealand to Kalach in the Voronezh region.</noindex>, how they built an entire division aka Incubator, where they hire juniors simultaneously (gradually transitioning them into product teams), training them with the help of mentors while also training developers to become team leads, and simultaneously working on simple production tasks that were previously outsourced to freelancers.

Alexandra will share not only the successes but also the challenges, the effectiveness metrics, and how they work with mentors and how this program benefits not only the juniors but also the mentors themselves.

Finally, Alexey Petrov in his presentation “Adaptation Checklist as a Tool for Smooth Onboarding” <noindex>will introduce</noindex> a more easily replicable, yet equally impressive technique — adaptation checklists, which clearly outline the steps for newcomers from the moment they join the team, a clear definition of done for each stage of onboarding, and the expected timeframe for completion.

Knowledge management processes and creating a culture of sharing

Presentations from this thematic block will discuss how to establish knowledge sharing processes in a team, where colleagues strive to share context, document outcomes and workflows for both their ‘future selves’ and other team members.

Igor Tsupko from Flanta <noindex>will share</noindex>, how to uncover tacit knowledge and competencies that are concentrated in the minds of employees using the widely used performance review technique. Did the goal-setting and performance evaluation methodology succeed in revealing the mysteries of competencies locked in employees' minds? We'll find out in the presentation.

Alexander Afyonov from Lamoda in his presentation "It's Hard to Be Kolya: Theory and Practice of Knowledge Sharing at Lamoda" <noindex>popular relocation destinations: from New Zealand to Kalach in the Voronezh region.</noindex> about the newcomer Nikolai, who joined Lamoda and has been trying to integrate into the team for six months, gathering information from different sources: onboarding plan, field tours, visits to actual warehouses and pickup points, communication with a mentor from the "veterans," knowledge bases, internal conferences, and even a Telegram channel. Alexander will explain how to organize all these sources into a system and then even use them for external knowledge sharing. Each of us has a little bit of Kolya in us.

Maria Palagina from Tinkoff Bank in her presentation "If You Don't Want to Get Wet — Swim: Voluntary-Coercive Knowledge Exchange" <noindex>popular relocation destinations: from New Zealand to Kalach in the Voronezh region.</noindex>, how the QA team bravely tackled issues of inadequate sharing and loss of knowledge and competencies within and between teams. Maria will offer two approaches to choose from — democratic and dictatorial — and will discuss how they can be effectively combined depending on the goals.

Personal Knowledge Management

Another interesting block of presentations — on personal knowledge management, note-taking, and organizing a personal knowledge base.

We will begin to explore the topic with <noindex>of the report</noindex> Andrey Alexandrov from Express42 "Applying Tiago Forte's Practices for Managing Your Knowledge". Once Andrey got tired of forgetting everything, like Dory the fish in a famous animated movie — the books he read, presentations, documents. He tried numerous techniques for storing knowledge, and Tiago Forte's practices proved to be the most effective. In his presentation, Andrey will talk about practices such as Progressive Summarization and RandomNote and their implementation on Calibra, MarginNote, and Evernote.

If you want to come prepared, then Google who Tiago Forte is and read his work <noindex>blog</noindex>. Of course, it wasn’t without difficulties, pitfalls, issues with retention and motivation, as well as resource investments, all of which we will learn about from the presentation.About the interconnection between e-learning and the knowledge management system will speak

Elena Tikhomirova Elena Tikhomirova, an independent expert and author of the book “Live Learning: What is e-learning and how to make it work.” Elena <noindex>popular relocation destinations: from New Zealand to Kalach in the Voronezh region.</noindex> about the entire arsenal of tools: curated content, storytelling, development of internal courses, training programs based on existing knowledge base materials, an awareness support system, and how to integrate them into a unified system.

Mikhail Ovchinnikov, author of courses for the online university for IT specialists Skillbox, will try to summarize his experience and <noindex>popular relocation destinations: from New Zealand to Kalach in the Voronezh region.</noindex>, how to construct a good course, keep students' attention so their motivation does not drop below zero, and they finish, how to add practical elements, what tasks should look like. Knowledge bases

At the same time, for those selecting technologies and tools for knowledge management, we have gathered a track of several presentations.

Alexandra White from Google in <noindex>presentation</noindex> “How to Create Compelling Multimedia Documentation” will talk about how to use video and other multimedia formats for the benefit of knowledge management in the team, rather than just for entertainment.

Several presentations about creating and structuring knowledge bases will excellently support the topic of technologies. We will start with the presentation of Ekaterina Gudkova from BIOCAD “Developing a Knowledge Base that is Actually Used”.
