Friends, we have come up with a new initiative. Many of you remember our fun geek project from last year, \"Server in the Clouds<\/a><\/noindex>\": we created a small server based on Raspberry Pi and launched it on a balloon. <\/p>\n

Now we've decided to take it even further, specifically higher \u2014 we are headed for the stratosphere!

\nTo briefly remind you, the essence of the first project \"Server in the Clouds\" was that the server didn't just fly on a balloon; the intrigue was that the device was operational and was transmitting its telemetry back to earth. <\/p>\n

\nThis meant that everyone interested could track the flight's route in real time. Before the launch, 480 people plotted markers on the map where the balloon might land.<\/p>\n

\nOf course, in full accordance with Murphy's law, the main communication channel via the GSM modem \"failed\" during the flight. Therefore, the crew had to literally switch to backup communication on the fly based on LoRa<\/a><\/noindex>. The balloonists also had to solve the problem with the USB cable connecting the telemetry module and Raspberry 3 \u2014 it seems it got scared of the altitude and refused to work. Fortunately, that was the end of the issues, and the balloon landed safely. Three lucky winners, whose markers were closest to the landing spot, received delicious prizes. By the way, for the first place, we offered participation in the AFR 2018 sailing regatta (Vitalik, hello!). <\/p>\n

The project proved that the idea of \"airborne servers\" is not as crazy as it may seem. And we want to take the next step towards a \"flying data center\": to test a server that will ascend to an altitude of about 30 km in a stratospheric balloon. We will time the launch to coincide with Cosmonautics Day, which means there\u2019s very little time left, less than a month. <\/p>\n

The name \"Server in the Clouds 2.0\" turns out to be somewhat inaccurate, as you won't find a single cloud at that height. So we can call the project \"Above Cloud Server\" (the next project will have to be named \"Baby, You're Space!\").<\/p>\n

\nAs in the first project, the server will be operational. But the twist is different: we want to test the concept of the famous Google Loon project and examine the very possibility of providing internet from the stratosphere.<\/p>\n

The server's operation scheme will look like this: on the landing page, you will be able to send text messages to the server through a form. They will be transmitted via HTTP protocol through 2 independent satellite communication systems to a computer suspended under the stratospheric balloon, which will then send this data back to Earth, but not via the satellite, rather through a radio channel. This way, we will know that the server is indeed receiving data and that it can provide internet from the stratosphere. Additionally, we will be able to calculate the percentage of information lost \"on the way.\" The same landing page will display a flight path graph of the stratospheric balloon, marking the points where each of your messages is received. This means you will be able to track the route and altitude of the \"cloud server\" in real time.<\/p>\n

And for the skeptics who say that this is all rigged, we will install a small screen on board, which will display all the messages received from you on an HTML page. The screen will be recorded by a camera, which will also capture part of the horizon. We want to broadcast the video signal over a radio channel, but there's a nuance: if the weather is good, the video should reach the ground during most of the balloon's flight, at 70-100 km high. However, if it's cloudy, the transmission range may drop to about 20 kilometers. In any case, the video will be recorded and we will publish it after we locate the fallen balloon. By the way, we will search for it using the onboard GPS beacon signal. According to statistics, the server will land within 150 km of the launch site.<\/p>\n

Soon, we will detail how the payload equipment of the stratospheric balloon will be structured and how all of this is intended to work together. We will also reveal some interesting details about the project related to space. <\/p>\n

To keep you engaged with the project as you were last year, we've organized a contest where you need to guess the landing spot of the server. The winner who guesses the landing spot most accurately will get to go to Baikonur for the launch of the crewed spacecraft 'Soyuz MS-13' on July 6. The second prize is a travel certificate from our friends at Tutu.ru. Twenty other participants will get to go on a group tour to the Star City in May.
