We will monitor EVERYTHING

CPU load, the number of disk read/write operations, allocated memory size, and a megaton of different counters that any decent monitoring system can provide.

As a result, we end up with a flurry of graphs, summary tables, continuous email alerts, and a 100% workload for engineers responding to a multitude of identical tickets, usually with the standard phrase — “Temporary issue. No action needed.” However, everyone is busy, and there is always something to show to the client — work is underway.

Path 2. Monitor only what is necessary, while what is not needed should not be monitored.

Monitoring can be done slightly differently — only entities and events:

To which the DBA engineer can apply influence.

For which there is an action algorithm in case an event or entity changes.

Based on this assumption and recalling “Philosophical Introduction” in order to avoid regular repetition of “Lyrical Introduction or Why All This Matters”, it makes sense to monitor the performance of individual queries for optimization and analysis, which should ultimately lead to an improvement in the overall performance of the database.

However, to improve a heavy query that affects the overall performance of the database, it must first be identified.

Thus, two interrelated questions arise:

what constitutes a heavy query?

how to find heavy queries.

Clearly, a heavy query is one that consumes a lot of OS resources to produce a result.

Now, let's move on to the second question — how to find and subsequently monitor heavy queries?

What monitoring options are available for queries in PostgreSQL?

Compared to Oracle, options are somewhat limited, but you can still accomplish certain tasks.

PG_STAT_STATEMENTS

The standard extension pg_stat_statements is designed for finding and monitoring heavy queries in PostgreSQL.

After installing the extension, a view with the same name appears in the target database, which must be used for monitoring purposes.

Target columns in pg_stat_statements for building a monitoring system:

queryid An internal hash code calculated from the parse tree of the statement.

max_time Maximum time spent on the statement, in milliseconds.

By accumulating and using statistics based on these two columns, a monitoring system can be built.

How pg_stat_statements is used for monitoring PostgreSQL performance

To monitor query performance, the following is used:
On the side of the target database — the pg_stat_statements view.
From the side server of the monitoring database — a set of bash scripts and service tables.

Stage 1 — Data Collection

On the monitoring host, a cron job regularly runs a script that copies the contents of the pg_stat_statements view from the target database to the pg_stat_history table in the monitoring database.

This way, a history of individual query executions is created, which can be used to generate performance reports and configure metrics.

Stage 2 — Performance Metrics Configuration

Based on the collected data, we select the queries whose execution is most critical/important for the client (application). In agreement with the client, we set the performance metric values using the queryid and max_time fields.

Result — Start of Performance Monitoring

When the monitoring script starts, it checks the configured performance metrics, comparing the max_time metric value with the value from the pg_stat_statements view in the target database.

If the value in the target database exceeds the metric value, a warning (an incident in the ticketing system) is generated.

Additional Feature 1

History of Query Execution Plans

For subsequent resolution of performance incidents, it is very useful to have a history of changes to query execution plans.

To store the history, a service table log_query is used. This table is populated by analyzing the loaded PostgreSQL log file. Unlike the pg_stat_statements view, the log file contains the full text with the execution parameter values, not just normalized text, allowing for logging not only the time and duration of queries but also storing the execution plans at the current moment.

Additional Feature 2

Continuous Performance Improvement Process

Monitoring individual queries is generally not intended for the task of continuously improving the performance of the database as a whole since it only monitors and addresses performance issues for individual queries. However, the method can be extended to configure monitoring for all database queries.

For this, additional performance metrics need to be introduced:

Over the past few days

For the baseline period

The script selects queries from the pg_stat_statements view in the target database and compares the max_time value with the average max_time, in the first case for the last days or for the selected time period (baseline), and in the second case.

Thus, in the event of performance degradation for any query, a warning will be generated automatically, without manual report analysis.

What does synthesis have to do with it?

In the described approach, as the synthesis method suggests — by improving individual parts of the system, we enhance the system as a whole.

Query executed by the database – thesis

Modified query – antithesis

Change in the state of the system — synthesis

<img decoding="async" alt="Synthesis as one of the methods for improving PostgreSQL performance"
