But it won't be as much fun.<\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habr.com\/ru\/company\/stepic\/blog\/447434\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"With love from Stepik: Educational Platform Hyperskill\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/f8514b8849c3aed194d11de489d48995.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><br \/>\n<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"habracut\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<h3>A philosophical digression<\/h3>\n<p>\nLet's imagine a young lady named Masha. Today, Masha planned to wash some fruits and watch a movie peacefully, but suddenly she discovered that the kitchen sink was clogged. What to do about it is yet unclear. She could postpone this question indefinitely, but she has free time right now, so Masha decides to tackle the problem immediately. Common sense suggests two options: a) call a plumber b) handle it herself. The lady chooses the second option and begins to study instructions on YouTube. Following the advice of user Vasya_the_plumber, Masha looks under the sink and sees a coiling plastic pipe made of several parts. The girl carefully unscrews one part at the base of the sink but finds nothing. A section of the pipe lower down turns out to be tightly clogged with an unknown substance, and even a fork found on the table can\u2019t clear the blockage. Experts from the internet give discouraging forecasts: the part will have to be replaced. On the map, Masha finds the nearest store, takes the troublesome piece of pipe with her, and buys a new one that is the same. Following the seller's advice, Masha also grabs a new strainer as a preventive measure. The quest is completed: the sink works as it should again, and its main character has learned the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The pipes under the sink can be unscrewed and screwed back by oneself;<\/li>\n<li>The nearest plumbing store is one and a half kilometers from Masha's apartment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nMost likely, Masha didn't even realize how much new she learned and what skills she acquired because she was focused on her own comfort in the future, as well as on the movie and the washed apple. The next time a similar problem arises, the girl will resolve it much faster. In fact, Masha was not just restoring the world to its usual state; she was learning <i>inductively<\/i>, that is, from specific cases, and <i>practically oriented<\/i>, that is, by doing things rather than studying them in detail and in advance.<\/p>\n<p>Things could have turned out differently. Let's say Masha is sitting in her chair one evening and suddenly realizes that she is not mentally and physically prepared for a clogged sink. She hurriedly enrolls in a plumbing academy, learning about types of sinks, pipes, and possible connections, the classification of plumbing issues, and potential solutions. Masha spends sleepless nights memorizing terms and names. She might even write a thesis on theoretical piping, deliberating on rubber gaskets. Finally, after receiving her certificate, Masha proudly surveys her kitchen, confident that even a minor problem with the sink can now be resolved with a snap of her fingers. In this scenario, the girl was trained <i>deductively<\/i>, moving from the general to the specific, and was primarily focused on <i>theory<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>. So, which approach would be better suited? In the case of the sink and clogging \u2014 the first, and here are the reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If only a functioning sink matters, then it is enough to know only what pertains specifically to that area. When Masha realizes that her knowledge is insufficient, she will surely find a way to learn more.<\/li>\n<li>Encyclopedic knowledge may not activate in a real situation because she has not developed a habit. To learn a sequence of actions, it\u2019s more effective to perform them than to just read about them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nLet's leave poor Masha alone and move on to the learning process itself.<\/p>\n<h3>Programming: Learn or Do?<\/h3>\n<p>\nWe tend to think that in order to grow and become an expert in an unfamiliar field, we first need to enroll in a university or at least sign up for courses. We diligently listen to what is taught, complete assignments. When we finally receive that coveted diploma or certificate, we quickly become lost because we never understood why we needed all that information and how to apply it specifically. This isn't a problem if the next step is to write academic papers and present them at conferences. Otherwise, we should also strive for skills, meaning doing and doing again concrete tasks, trying and failing, so that we remember for a long time how not to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>One of the areas where expertise and a keen eye go hand in hand with a broad perspective is programming. If you talk to experienced developers, you'll hear bold stories about individuals who, from a young age, were engaged in mathematics\/physics\/teaching, and later grew tired and switched to backend development. There are also programmers without higher education! What is valued first and foremost in a developer is not a certificate or diploma, but the quantity and quality of programs, scripts, and websites they have written. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut wait!\u201d you may argue, &#187; It sounds nice \u2014 just take it and do it! I can\u2019t just write a program for myself if I haven't programmed before! It\u2019s important for me to understand where to write, how to communicate with the compiler in the programming language. It\u2019s not as easy as looking up a plumber\u2019s phone number on Google.&#187;. <\/p>\n<p>There is a bitter truth in this. One unfamiliar aspect leads to another, that, in turn, leads to a third, and soon this process turns into a magician's show, who continues to pull out linked handkerchiefs and can't seem to extract them from the hat. The process, I must honestly say, is unpleasant; by the fifth \"handkerchief\", it already feels like the depth of ignorance is close to the Mariana Trench. The alternative is the same old lectures on 10 types of variables, 3 types of loops, and 150 potentially useful libraries. It's sad.<\/p>\n<h3>Hyperskill: we built, built, and finally built it.<\/h3>\n<p>\nWe thought long and hard about this problem. The length of our deliberation is eloquently highlighted by the date of the last post in our blog. After all the debates and attempts to integrate a new approach into Stepik, we ended up with... a different site. You may have already heard about it as part of JetBrains Academy. We named it Hyperskill, integrated project-based learning into it, linked it to a knowledge base on Java, and secured support from the EduTools team. Now let's go into more detail.<\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/hi.hyperskill.org\/about\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"With love from Stepik: Educational Platform Hyperskill\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/a03d72e47c3f043f58bc2a3fd27ae868.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p><b>A specific goal.<\/b> We offer a \"menu\" of projects, i.e., programs that you can write with our assistance. Among them are tic-tac-toe, a personal assistant, blockchain, a search engine, and more. Projects consist of 5-6 stages; the result of each stage is a completed program. \"Why then do we need the other stages if everything is already working at the first stage?\" Thank you for the question. With each step, the program becomes more functional or faster. Initially, the code may take 10 lines, but towards the end, it might not fit into 500.<\/p>\n<p><b>A bit of theory.<\/b> It's impossible to sit down and write even Hello World without knowing a word about programming. Therefore, at each stage of the project, you will see what theoretical basics you need to master and, most importantly, where to find them. The basics are also located on Hyperskill in the 'Knowledge Map' section. For the first stage of the project, students are not required to read data from a file, even if they don't know how to do it yet. They will learn it later for general development, or it might be needed in the next stage.<\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/hyperskill.org\/knowledge-map\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"With love from Stepik: Educational Platform Hyperskill\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9127aa37ea1ad5aa2d3a3ee8b41c5726.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p><b>Knowledge Map.<\/b> It shows which topics you have already studied and how they are connected to each other. Open any interesting topic. You can skim through it, but we recommend completing a few small tasks to ensure that the information is retained. At first, the platform will give you tests, followed by a couple of programming tasks. If your code compiles and passes the tests, compare it with the reference solution; sometimes this helps reveal a more optimal implementation. Or just confirm that your solution is great as it is.<\/p>\n<p><b>Nothing extra.<\/b> We welcome both 'green' users and experienced developers. If you have already written programs, that's fine; we won't make you add 2 + 2 or reverse a string again. To immediately reach the right level, indicate what you're already familiar with during registration and choose a more challenging project. Don't be afraid to overestimate yourself: if necessary, you can always return to a forgotten topic in the knowledge map.<\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/hyperskill.org\/onboarding\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"With love from Stepik: Educational Platform Hyperskill\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/21e1605f7a007e98fb9122d574f5256c.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p><b>Tools.<\/b> It's great to write small pieces of code in a special window on the site, but real programming begins with working in a development environment (<b>I<\/b>ntegrated <b>D<\/b>evelopment <b>E<\/b>Experienced programmers know not only how to write code but also how to design a graphical interface, assemble different files into a project, use additional development tools, and part of these processes is handled by the IDE. Why not learn these skills while mastering programming? This is where JetBrains comes in with a special version of IntelliJ IDEA Community Educational that has the EduTools plugin pre-installed. In this IDE, you can take courses, check your completed tasks, and refer to project hints if you forget something. Don't worry if you're hearing the terms \"plugin\" or \"IDE\" for the first time: we'll explain what they are and how to install them on your computer or laptop with minimal hassle. Tackle the theory, then move on to the IDE and complete each stage of the project right there. <\/p>\n<p><b>Deadlines.<\/b> There are none! Who are we to knock on your head and tell you at what pace to write your program? When you enjoy writing code and want to finish it, you write it, whether today or tomorrow. Engage in development at your own pace.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mistakes.<\/b> Everyone makes them; you'll make them too at some stage of the project, and then that stage won't pass the automated tests. Well, you'll have to figure out what went wrong on your own. We could tell you where the mistake lies, but would that teach you to write code carefully? Read the hints from IDEA or the theoretical topic on Bugs, and when the program finally runs, the rush of dopamine will likely follow soon after.<\/p>\n<p><b>Visible results.<\/b> So, you've completed your first project; what's next? Enjoy the fruits of your labor! Play tic-tac-toe with your friends, and show off your achievements. Upload the project to GitHub to showcase it to future employers, write the description yourself, and include the skills you've applied. Four to five complex projects, and voil\u00e0, a modest portfolio for a budding developer is ready. <\/p>\n<p><b>Opportunity for growth.<\/b> Let's say you're looking at Hyperskill and don't see an important topic or useful project there.
