The process is certainly slow and somewhat problematic — cars are often parked on bike lanes, bike paths do not withstand winters with salt and wear out, and not every place can physically accommodate these bike paths. In general, there are issues, but it's encouraging that they are at least trying to address them.

Let's take a look at how cycling infrastructure works in the Netherlands — a country with a long history of cycling, where the number of bicycles exceeds the number of residents.

In the Netherlands, bicycles are not just a means of transport but a part of the national culture.
<noindex></noindex>

Bike Paths

Bike paths are everywhere in the Netherlands, and this is not a literary exaggeration. From almost any point in the country, you can reach any other point without getting off your bike. The paths are marked in a different color, so it's hard to confuse them, and of course, pedestrians are not advised to walk on them. Plus, it's often not possible since bike traffic can be quite lively.

Whenever possible, bike paths are physically separated from sidewalks, although this is not always achievable and depends on the width of the street.

Of course, they aren’t always that empty; during peak hours, it often looks like this:

(source <noindex>thecyclingdutchman.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-ultimate-amsterdam-bike-ride.html</noindex>)

By the way, there are even special models of GPS receivers (like the Garmin Edge) pre-loaded with bike paths that plot routes specifically along them.

The bike paths themselves are usually separated not only from the sidewalk but also from the roadway, making them quite safe — there’s clear marking, signs, separate traffic lights, and each bike path is often duplicated on both sides of the road, so physically crossing into oncoming traffic is nearly impossible. Therefore, most Dutch people do not wear helmets, and bike accidents are practically an exception — it's certainly possible to fall off a bike, but it's difficult to get seriously hurt.

By the way, the reason there are more bicycles than bikes in the Netherlands is simple. Many people use two bikes: one to ride from home to the metro, leaving it near the train station, and the other to ride from the terminal station to work. Additionally, some may own an old rusty bike that they don’t mind leaving outside, and another good one at home for sports or longer weekend trips. Moreover, with an average price of 2 Euros for a tram or bus ride, an old used bike costing 100-200 Euros can easily pay for itself over a season, even if it’s just thrown away afterward (though it seems the Dutch hardly ever throw away bikes — I haven’t seen such antique models anywhere else for a long time).

Infrastructure

Of course, for people to use bicycles, it has to be convenient. The government invests significant funds into this. Almost every station or stop has bike parking — the size can range from a simple rack to a covered shelter, or even an underground parking lot for thousands of bicycles. Often, all of this is free.

Parking can vary in size, from these:

To these:

(source <noindex>bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2015/06/02/bicycle-parking-at-delft-central-station</noindex>)

Huge underground bike parks are being built; here are a couple of pictures to understand the scale of the construction and the money involved:

(source — <noindex>youtube video</noindex>)

Of course, almost every office center not only has bike parking but also showers for employees.

However, there are still not enough parking spaces for everyone, and many find it inconvenient to walk to them, so bikes are just left outside and locked to anything available. Practically, any tree or pole also serves as a good bike parking spot (if it's not raining, but this doesn’t deter owners — in such cases, a bag is simply placed over the saddle).

Another important point is that you can take a bike on the metro or train (outside of peak hours, and the number is limited to a few per wagon). Scooters are also quite rare.

Conclusions

As can be seen, if desired by both people and the government, a lot can be accomplished. Of course, the climate also plays a role (the average winter temperature in the Netherlands is +3-5, and snow occurs for only one week a year). But even in the Russian climate, with a good network of bike paths, I'm sure many would switch to bicycles for at least 5-6 months of the year. This is also an investment in ecology, in the fight against global warming, and other matters.

P.S.: This picture — is not really the Netherlands, but St. Petersburg:

(source — <noindex>pikabu.ru/story/v_sanktpeterburge_otkryili_yakhtennyiy_most_5082262</noindex>)

The Dutch experience is being adopted (consultants were invited for guidance), which is encouraging.

Source: habr.com

[702

post-31278","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news

 <meta property="og:title" content="🥇Велоинфраструктура в Голландии — как это работает?
