Today, I will continue the story about the global conference Cisco Live EMEA 2019. Let's immediately move from the general to the specific, to the announcements presented by the vendor during the specialized sessions.

This was my first participation at Cisco Live, with the mission to attend the technical program events, immerse myself in the world of advanced technologies and solutions, and establish myself at the forefront of specialists involved in Cisco's product ecosystem in Russia.
Implementing this mission in practice turned out to be quite challenging: the technical session program was extremely packed. It was physically impossible to attend all round tables, panels, workshops, and discussions, which were divided into numerous sections and started in parallel. Everything was discussed: data centers, networks, cybersecurity, software solutions, hardware – any aspect of Cisco and the vendor's partners' operations was presented in a separate section, with a huge number of events. I had to follow the organizers' recommendations and create my own personal agenda for the events, reserving seats in the halls in advance.

I will elaborate on the sessions I managed to attend.
<noindex></noindex>

Accelerating Big Data and AI/ML on UCS and HX

This session was dedicated to reviewing Cisco's platforms for developing artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions. It was a semi-marketing event with some technical elements included.

The essence is this: today, IT engineers and data specialists spend a significant amount of time and resources designing architectures that combine legacy infrastructure, several stacks to enable machine learning, and software to manage this complex.

Cisco aims to simplify this task: the vendor focuses on changing traditional patterns of data center management and workflows by enhancing the integration of all necessary components for AI/ML.

As an example, a case of collaboration between Cisco and <noindex>Google</noindex>: companies combine UCS and HyperFlex platforms with leading industry software products for AI/ML such as <noindex>KubeFlow</noindex> to create a comprehensive on-premise infrastructure.

The company explained how KubeFlow, deployed based on UCS/HX in conjunction with the Cisco Container Platform, transforms the solution into what the company's employees referred to as the "Cisco/Google open hybrid cloud" – an infrastructure where symmetric development and operation of the working environment for AI tasks can be implemented simultaneously on-premise and in Google Cloud.

Session on the Internet of Things (IoT)

Cisco actively promotes the need for IoT development based on its own networking solutions. The company discussed its Industrial Router product – a special line of compact LTE switches and routers with enhanced reliability, moisture resistance, and no moving parts. These switches can be integrated into any object in the surrounding world: transportation, industrial sites, commercial buildings. The main idea is: "Deploy these switches at your locations and manage them from the cloud using a centralized console." The line operates on Kinetic Software for optimizing remote deployment and management. The goal is to enhance the manageability of IoT systems.

ACI-Multisite Architecture and Deployment (ACI or Application Centric Infrastructure, and network micro-segmentation)

Session focused on the concept of infrastructure oriented towards network micro-segmentation. This was the most complex and detailed session I attended. The general message from Cisco was as follows: previously, traditional IT system components (network, servers, storage systems, etc.) were connected and configured separately. The engineers' task was to integrate everything into a unified manageable working environment. UCS changed the situation – the networking part became a separate domain, while server management was centralized from a single panel. It doesn’t matter how many servers – 10 or 10,000, any number can be controlled from a single management point, managing and transferring data occurs through a single cable. ACI allows the integration of both networking and server management into one control console.

Thus, network micro-segmentation is a crucial feature of ACI that allows granular separation of applications within a system with varying levels of interaction between themselves and the outside world. For example, two virtual machines managed by ACI cannot communicate with each other by default. Interaction is enabled only by opening a so-called "contract" that allows for detailed access lists for fine (in other words, micro) network segmentation.

Micro-segmentation enables precise tuning of any segment of IT systems by isolating any components and linking them together in various configurations of physical and virtual machines. Groups of endpoint groups (EPG) are created, to which filtering and traffic routing policies are applied. Cisco ACI allows grouping these EPGs in existing applications into new micro-segments (uSeg) and configuring network policies or VM attributes for each specific element of the micro-segment.

For instance, you can assign web servers to a certain EPG to apply the same policies to them. By default, all computing nodes in the EPG can freely communicate with each other. However, if the web EPG includes web servers for development and production stages, it might make sense to prohibit them from communicating with each other to prevent failures. Micro-segmentation with Cisco ACI allows creating a new EPG and automatically writing policies based on VM name attributes such as "Prod-xxxx" or "Dev-xxx."

Undoubtedly, this was one of the key sessions of the technical program.

Effective evolution of a DC Networking (Evolution of Data Center Networks in the Context of Virtualization Technologies)

This session was logically linked to the session on network micro-segmentation, and also covered the topic of container networking. Overall, it discussed the migration from one generation of virtual routers to another – with architectural schemes, connection schemes between different hypervisors, etc.

Thus, the ACI architecture – VXLAN, micro-segmentation, and a distributed firewall, which allow configuring the firewall for a conditional 100 virtual machines.
The ACI architecture allows these operations to be performed not at the level of the virtual OS, but at the level of the virtual network: it is safer to configure a specific set of rules for each machine not from the OS manually, but at the level of the virtualized network, making it safer, faster, and less labor-intensive, etc. The best control over everything happening is at each segment of the network. What's new:

ACI Anywhere allows policies to be applied to public clouds (currently AWS, in the future – Azure), as well as to on-premise elements or in the web, simply by copying the necessary configuration settings and policies.

Virtual Pod – a virtual instance of ACI, a copy of the physical management module, its use requires the existence of a physical original (though this is not certain).

How this can be applied in practice: expanding network connectivity to large clouds. Multi-cloud is on the rise, and more companies are using hybrid configurations, facing the need for disparate network setups in each cloud environment. Now ACI Anywhere allows for networks to be laid out with a unified approach, protocols, and policies.

Designing Storage Networks for the Next Decade in an All-Flash Data Center (SAN networks)

An interesting session on SAN networks with a demonstration of best practices for configuration.
Top content: overcoming slow drain on SAN networks. It occurs when one or more data arrays undergo an upgrade or replacement with a more powerful configuration while the rest of the infrastructure remains unchanged. This leads to the ‘slowing down’ of all applications running on this infrastructure. The FC protocol lacks the window size negotiation technology that the IP protocol possesses. Therefore, when there is a mismatch between the amount of information sent and the bandwidth and compute areas of the channel, there is a chance of encountering slow drain. Recommendations for overcoming this include monitoring the balance of bandwidth and the performance speed of the host edge and storage edge so that the channel aggregation speed exceeds that of the rest of the fabric. Also discussed were ways to identify slow drain, such as traffic segregation using vSAN.

A significant focus was placed on zoning. The main recommendation for SAN configuration is to adhere to the '1:1' principle (one initiator per target). If the network fabric is large, this generates an enormous workload. However, the TCAM list is not infinite, which is why smart zoning and auto zoning options have emerged in Cisco's software solutions for managing SAN.

HyperFlex Deep Dive Session

Find me in the photo 🙂

This session was dedicated to the HyperFlex platform as a whole – its architecture, data protection methods, various application scenarios, including next-generation tasks: for example, for data analytics.

The main message is that the capabilities of the platform today allow it to be configured for any task, scaling and distributing its resources among the challenges facing the business. Platform experts presented the key advantages of the hyper-converged architecture, the most significant of which today is the ability to rapidly deploy any advanced technological solutions with minimal configuration costs, reducing TCO on IT and enhancing performance. Cisco ensures all these advantages through advanced networking solutions and management software.

A separate part of the session was dedicated to Logical Availability Zones – a technology that enhances the fault tolerance of server clusters. For example, if there are 16 nodes assembled into a single cluster with a replication factor of 2 or 3, the technology will create copies of servers, mitigating the impacts of potential server failures by sacrificing space.

Summary and Conclusions

Cisco is actively promoting the idea that today, all capabilities for configuring and monitoring IT infrastructure are available from the cloud, and these solutions should be adopted as soon as possible and on a large scale. Simply because they are more convenient, eliminate the need to address a mountain of infrastructure issues, and make your business more flexible and modern.

As device performance increases, so do the associated risks. 100-gigabit interfaces are now a reality, and it is essential to learn how to manage technologies in relation to business needs and one’s own competencies. Deploying IT infrastructure has become straightforward, but management and development have become significantly more complex.

At the same time, there’s nothing radically new in terms of basic technologies and protocols (everything uses Ethernet, TCP/IP, etc.), but multiple encapsulations (VLAN, VXLAN, etc.) make the overall system extremely complex. Behind seemingly simple interfaces today lie very complicated architectures and issues, and the cost of a single mistake has risen. Easier management means a greater risk of making a fatal error. It is always important to remember that any policy you change is applied immediately and affects all devices in your IT infrastructure. In the long term, adopting the latest technological approaches and concepts like ACI will require a radical upgrade in staff training and process development within the company: you will have to pay a high price for simplicity. With progress come risks of an entirely new level and type.

Epilogue

While I was preparing the article about tech sessions at Cisco Live, my colleagues from the cloud team managed to attend Cisco Connect in Moscow. Here’s what interesting insights they gathered there.

Panel discussion on the challenges of digitalization

Presentations by IT leaders from a bank and a mining company. Summary: whereas IT specialists used to approach management for approval of purchases with difficulty, now it’s the opposite — management is pursuing IT as part of the enterprise's digitalization processes. There are two notable strategies: the first can be called 'innovative' — finding new solutions, filtering, testing, and applying them practically; the second, 'early adopter strategy', involves learning from cases presented by Russian and foreign colleagues, partners, and vendors and using them in your company.

<img decoding="async" alt="Cisco Live 2019 EMEA. It is designed for running applications based on artificial intelligence and machine learning, particularly TensorFlow, which delivers a performance of 8×125 teraFLOPs. The server is equipped with a visitor route analytics system enabled by processing video streams.

New Nexus 9316D switch

In a 1U chassis, there are 16 ports of 400 Gbps, totaling 6.4 Tbps.
For comparison, I looked at the peak traffic of the largest traffic exchange point in Russia, MSK-IX — 3.3 Tbps, meaning a significant part of the RuNet is in 1U.
Supports L2, L3, ACI.

And finally: an attention-grabbing image from our presentation at Cisco Connect.

<img decoding="async" alt="Cisco Live 2019 EMEA.
