New details have been published regarding the breach of the infrastructure of the decentralized messaging platform Matrix, which was reported this morning. The weak link through which the attackers infiltrated was the Jenkins continuous integration system, which was compromised on March 13. Subsequently, on the Jenkins server, the redirected SSH session of one of the administrators was intercepted, and on April 4, the attackers gained access to other servers in the infrastructure.<\/p>\n

During the second attack, the website matrix.org was redirected to another server (matrixnotorg.github.io) through changes to the DNS settings, using the API key for the Cloudflare content delivery system intercepted during the first attack. When reconstructing the content servers<\/a> after the first breach, the Matrix administrators only updated the new personal keys and missed updating the Cloudflare key. <\/p>\n

During the second attack, the Matrix servers remained untouched; changes were limited to just replacing addresses in the DNS. If a user has already changed their password after the first attack, they do not need to change it a second time. However, if the password has not yet been changed, it should be updated as soon as possible, as the leakage of the database with hashed passwords has been confirmed. Currently, there are plans to initiate a forced password reset process upon the next login.<\/p>\n

In addition to the password leak, it has also been confirmed that the GPG keys used for creating digital signatures of packages in the Debian repository Synapse and releases of Riot\/Web were captured by the attackers. The keys were password protected. Currently, the keys have already been revoked. The keys were intercepted on April 4, but no updates for Synapse have been released since then; however, there was a release of the Riot\/Web client 1.0.7, (preliminary checks indicated that it was not compromised). <\/p>\n

The attacker posted a series of reports detailing the attack on GitHub, but they were removed. Nevertheless, the reports remain archived.
