This vulnerability was named KRACK (short for Key Reinstallation Attack) and was identified by researchers Mathy Vanhoef and Eyal Ronen. After its discovery, the KRACK vulnerability was addressed with updated firmware for devices, and the WPA3 protocol, which replaced WPA2 last year, was supposed to completely eliminate security issues in Wi-Fi networks.

Unfortunately, the same researchers found equally dangerous vulnerabilities in the WPA3 protocol. Therefore, it is again necessary to wait and hope for new firmware for wireless access points and devices; otherwise, we will have to live with the knowledge of vulnerabilities in home and public Wi-Fi networks. The vulnerabilities found in WPA3 have been collectively named Dragonblood.

The root of the problem, as before, lies in the connection establishment mechanism, or what is referred to in the standard as the ‘handshake’. This mechanism in the WPA3 standard is called Dragonfly. Prior to the discovery of Dragonblood, it was considered well-protected. The Dragonblood package includes a total of five types of vulnerabilities: denial of service, two downgrade vulnerabilities, and two side-channel attack vulnerabilities.

Denial of service does not lead to data leakage, but it can be an unpleasant experience for a user who is repeatedly unable to connect to the access point. The other vulnerabilities allow an attacker to recover passwords needed for user access to the access point and track any critical information relevant to the user.

Downgrade attacks force a switch to the older WPA2 protocol or to weaker versions of the WPA3 encryption algorithms, allowing continued exploitation using previously known methods. Side-channel attacks exploit specific characteristics of the WPA3 algorithms and their implementations, ultimately enabling the use of familiar password cracking techniques. More details can be found here. A toolkit for discovering Dragonblood vulnerabilities can be found at this link.

The Wi-Fi Alliance, responsible for developing Wi-Fi standards, has been informed about the discovered vulnerabilities. It is reported that equipment manufacturers are preparing modified firmware to close the security gaps identified.
