Kris Moore, the creator of the PC-BSD project and vice president of iXsystems, announced<\/a><\/noindex> on the start of testing installation builds FreeBSD 12-STABLE<\/noindex> and FreeBSD 13-HEAD<\/noindex>, in which the originally supported ZFS filesystem implementation in FreeBSD has been replaced with developments from the project \u201cZFS on Linux<\/a><\/noindex>\u201d. Thanks to the initiative for ensuring code portability of \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d to other systems, ports for FreeBSD have been are prepared<\/a><\/noindex> the sysutils\/zol (utilities) and sysutils\/zol-kmod (kernel module), which are now recommended for testing. In the context of the filesystem, the simplest way to test is by providing ready-made installation images, in which the original ZFS implementation is disabled and the ports with \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d are pre-installed. UFS and ZFS can be used as the filesystem for the root partition.<\/p>\n

A year ago, Delphix decided to switch to \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d, leading to the stagnation of ZFS from the Illumos project and the transfer of all related development activity to the \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d project, which is now considered the primary implementation OpenZFS<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n

The FreeBSD developers decided to follow the general example and not try to hold onto Illumos, as this implementation is significantly behind in functionality and requires considerable resources for code maintenance and transferring changes. \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d is now regarded as the main joint project for ZFS development. Support for FreeBSD will be directly integrated into the \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d code and will evolve primarily in this project's main repository.<\/p>\n
