The Bleeping Computer portal contacted Mozilla, and it was found out<\/a><\/noindex> the position on the tracking mechanism for hyperlink clicks using the attribute \"ping<\/a><\/noindex>\", the support for which is currently disabled by default in Firefox. Interest in the attribute \"ping\" arose after the removal<\/a><\/noindex> of options to disable it in Chrome and Safari.<\/p>\n

We agree that enabling the \"ping\" attribute, which is typically used for hyperlink auditing, is not a privacy issue but a task to enhance user experience by providing websites with a more optimal solution for hyperlink auditing that is free from the performance drop associated with other tracking methods listed in the publication<\/a><\/noindex> the WebKit developer blog. In fact, we already support the API sendBeacon<\/a><\/noindex> and the reason we still do not enable the \"ping\" attribute is that our implementation of this feature is still not ready.<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n

We do not believe that simply providing an option to disable the ping attribute will yield any noticeable improvement in user privacy, as websites can (and often already do) determine supported various mechanisms for hyperlink auditing in each browser, and disabling the more \"user-friendly\" mechanisms will only lead to a fallback to less \"user-friendly\" mechanisms, without completely disabling the audit of hyperlinks.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When applied in the tag with the attribute \"ping=URL\", the browser creates a POST request to the URL specified in the attribute, passing information about the transition through the HTTP_PING_TO header. Without the ping attribute, sites can implement hyperlink auditing by replacing the real link with an intermediate link or by sending information via XMLHttpRequest or sendBeacon calls, which has long been used in Google search, when following external links in the VK social network, and in the browser add-on repository addons.mozilla.org. Since this type of replacement can be done by hiding the intermediate link using JavaScript, just as with the ping attribute, it is impossible to understand without analyzing the code whether auditing is applied for the current link or not.<\/p>\n
