A total of 378 developers participated in the voting, representing 37% of all eligible voters (last year the turnout was 33%, and the year before that 30%). This year, the elections saw participation from<\/a><\/noindex> four candidates for the leader position. Sam Hartman emerged victorious (Sam Hartman<\/a><\/noindex>).<\/p>\n

Sam joined the project in 2000 and started by preparing packages for Kerberos. Later, he was involved in maintaining and creating packages related to encryption. At his primary job, Sam contributed to the development of Kerberos and worked on the Moonshot<\/a><\/noindex> project, using Debian as a platform to test the implementation of new security mechanisms in operating systems. Notably, Sam served as Chief Technologist at the MIT Kerberos Consortium for several years and was the Director of Security at IETF<\/a><\/noindex> (Internet Engineering Taskforce). Among his personal interests, he is noted for his DJing, and he also develops his own software for DJs.<\/p>\n

Among the main goals that the new leader aims to achieve is to create conditions that encourage people to enjoy spending their time participating in Debian's activities. To reach this goal, it is planned to simplify, streamline, and clarify processes and interactions, enhance the project's appeal to new participants, ensure the maintenance of a friendly atmosphere in the community, and foster mutual understanding, regardless of the final decisions taken and the approval or rejection of certain ideas.<\/p>\n
