Microsoft is actively participating in the Chromium project, which serves as the foundation for browsers like Edge, Google Chrome, and many others. Currently, Chrome features its own smooth scrolling function, and the Redmond company is now working<\/a><\/noindex> on enhancing this capability.<\/p>\n

In Chromium browsers, scrolling by clicking on the scrollbar can feel cumbersome. Microsoft aims to implement classic smooth scrolling, similar to that in Edge, which will improve browser usability. From what is known, this involves allocating a separate process for scrolling so that browser freezes or mouse-related events do not affect the scrolling.<\/p>\n

There are also reports of significant delays in Chromium when the scrollbar is dragged with a mouse. It is claimed that this latency is 2 to 4 times higher in Google's solution compared to the old EdgeHTML engine. This is especially noticeable on \"heavy\" websites packed with advertisements, graphics, and so on. It is suggested that transferring scrolling from the main process to a child process could resolve this issue.<\/p>\n

Some commits on this subject have already been accepted in Chromium and Canary builds, and the code has been merged with the testing branch. In earlier versions of the browser, the feature can already be activated using the Edge scrollbar scrolling flag, though crashes are not ruled out. Microsoft is also working on other parts of scrolling improvements, although it is still unclear when all of this will be released.<\/p>\n
