Since then, quite a few terabytes have been transferred, and I became curious about what is currently available on the market for good LTE or 4G network access. So, I gathered some old and new routers capable of working via cellular networks and compared their speed and functions. You can check the results below. As usual, if someone finds it tedious to read, they can watch the video.

<noindex></noindex>

Let's start with the fact that I didn't aim to determine which cellular operator provides the best speed, but rather to see which modem/router offers the highest speed under identical conditions. Beeline was chosen as the provider. The available operators in my region are Beeline, MTS, MegaFon, Tele2, Yota, and WiFire. Beeline was selected simply because I already had its SIM card. I don’t favor any provider – each one is just here to make money.

Testing methodology
The base station is approximately 8 km away in a straight line, if we believe the router. All tests were conducted on a weekday between 11 AM and 1 PM, as this is when the 4G networks experience the least load. I fundamentally do not consider 3G networks in this test, since they also carry voice traffic, while only data is transmitted over 4G. To preempt discussions about VoLTE, I will say that voice over LTE has not yet been launched at the testing location. The test was conducted three times using the Speedtest service, and the data was recorded in a table to calculate the average download speed, upload speed, and ping. Attention was also paid to the capabilities of the router. Testing conditions: clear weather, no precipitation. There are no leaves on the trees. The equipment was positioned 10 meters above the ground.
Tests for all devices were conducted separately for the 'bare' router in its factory configuration. The second test was done with a small directional antenna connected, if the device had corresponding ports. The third test was conducted with a connection to a large panel antenna.
In the last column, I added the final cost of the solution: for example, a router + modem + antenna may perform better than just a router, but cost less. The color gradation is introduced to visually distinguish various base devices to which an additional antenna can be connected.
I will provide a scan of the radio frequency to understand the signal reception conditions and the presence of base stations within the router's operating radius.

<img decoding="async" alt="Internet for summer cottage owners. It works in 2G/3G/4G networks. It has ports for connecting an external antenna. Equipped with a built-in battery, it lasts for a couple of hours of heavy usage or about 5 hours of leisurely surfing. There is a slot for installing a microSD card, which is accessible through local wireless network access. The cost is quite reasonable, and when connected to a small or even large antenna via various pigtails and cable assemblies, it delivers a very decent result, ranking fourth in speed ratings. The router is very convenient for travel and car trips, as it takes up little space but provides internet access for everyone within a small radius. However, it has its downsides: the range is not very extensive— it won't cover the entire area of a dacha. There are no Ethernet ports, meaning wired IP cameras and other network equipment wishing to connect via cable cannot be used. It only supports Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, so in places with a lot of networks, speed may even be limited. Moreover, you can connect an Android or iOS smartphone to the USB port, and the router will use it as a modem. Additionally, the Keenetic Viva can use any Wi-Fi source as an Internet access point, whether it's a neighbor's Internet, a public hotspot, or shared Internet from a smartphone. At home, this router connects to the network via a regular Ethernet cable and allows operation in networks at speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second. This means it's a universal device that can be used both at home and in a summer house. Furthermore, you can connect an external storage device to the free USB port (there are two) and the router will automatically download torrents or serve as a local server for storing video from surveillance cameras. As for working with 4G networks through a modem, this setup took second place in the test, but it required connecting a large external antenna. Even without it, for just 9,000 rubles, you can obtain an excellent router with a wide range of features and stable Internet access. It's great that the 4G modem can be used as a backup channel: when the wired provider “drops,” the router will automatically switch to using the USB modem. If the modem hangs, the router will reboot it by power. The key difference is that version v1 has external antennas for 3G/4G networks, while the Wi-Fi antennas are built-in. The other versions have the opposite configuration. This means that you can connect an external antenna to the first version, but not to the second and third versions. It's worth noting that the router has decent built-in antennas with good signal strength. The firmware functionality is also quite rich, although it lags behind the model from Keenetic. Standard SMA connectors are ready for external antenna connection, which allowed me to triple my speed. However, there are drawbacks to the router: according to forums, TP-Link's technical support is quite lacking, firmware updates are rare, and there have been numerous glitches in the first version, which is highly valued for "dacha" users. In my case, the router has been working without issues for several years. It has traveled with me to many cities, worked in the fields powered by a car inverter, providing Internet access to an entire company. The router is feature-rich: sensitive LTE antennas, SMA connectors for external antennas, two ports for connecting analog telephone sets, 5 Ethernet ports, and a USB port. Essentially, this router is like a complete device that provides both Internet access and allows for telephone connection, thanks to its built-in SIP client. Additionally, the LTE module can serve as a backup Internet connection if the primary wired line fails. This means the router can operate both at home (in the office) and at the cottage. The USB port can be used to connect an external storage device or printer. Speed tests show that it is only slightly less capable than the TP-Link Archer MR200 in download speeds, while being a third cheaper. Although the model has been discontinued, it is easily found in the secondary market. It has just a couple of drawbacks: it works only on 4G networks and doesn't receive firmware updates. The latter is not a major concern, as the current firmware is quite stable and functional, while working only on 4G networks suits me just fine—after all, these are the networks operated by mobile companies providing unlimited Internet.
+ A feature-rich router that allows for external antenna connection and can connect a telephone set.
— Works only on LTE networks; firmware updates are not available.

Zyxel LTE3316-M604

<img decoding="async" alt="Internet for summer cottage owners. This stylish white device still offers a couple of ports for connecting an external antenna, demonstrating support for MIMO technology. This is particularly interesting as the router supports data transmission in both 3G and 4G networks. However, it differs from the previous model by lacking a USB port and only having one FXS port, meaning you can connect only one analog telephone. Notably, this model does not have a built-in SIP client, so calls will be made through the installed SIM card. If the network supports VoLTE, you can continue working and communicating simultaneously; otherwise, the router will switch to 3G, which may interrupt internet access. Additionally, compared to the previous model, the informativeness of the menu has decreased, but the speed performance in the LTE network is impressive! It surpasses the previous Zyxel LTE3316-M604 model by almost one and a half times, both with an external antenna and while using the built-in one. It can work with two internet providers (via cable and LTE) and switch to a backup connection in case the primary channel fails. This model is fascinating in many respects: the antenna, 2G/3G/4G modem, and router are all housed in a sealed unit designed for outdoor installation, making it resilient against all weather conditions. This means that even in our latitudes, this device can withstand both scorching summers and severe winters. There is also a younger model, the LTE7240-M403, but it only reliably works down to -20 degrees, while the Zyxel LTE7460-M608 can handle temperatures as low as -40. Overall, this device is perfect for those who don't want to deal with external antennas, cable assemblies, and other installations. The antenna can be positioned towards the base station with the included bracket, connecting just one Ethernet cable, which also carries power (the PoE injector can be placed conveniently indoors), after which the user gets an Ethernet connection to the internet. However, for a comfortable experience, it's necessary to install a wireless access point or some kind of router to set up both wired and wireless networks at home. Regarding speed specifications, this router outperformed all other models until... until a large panel antenna was connected to the others. After all, the two built-in antennas with a gain of up to 8 dBi are no match for a large panel antenna with a gain of up to 16 dBi. But as a ready-made solution for installation and operation, it can be recommended.
+ Operates in 2G/3G/4G networks, excellent reception, works in any weather conditions, requires only one cable to be run to the installation site.
— A separate Wi-Fi router will be needed to create a wired and wireless network at home.

Results

Looking at this histogram, it becomes immediately clear how much the speed of reception and transmission depends on the antenna gain. Furthermore, in the first test, without the use of external antennas, the sensitivity of the internal antennas and radio modules of the modems became apparent. Using a directional panel antenna increased the connectivity speed threefold – isn't that impressive when you want a lot of internet for little money? However, it's important to remember that purchasing a router does not guarantee a good connection, and you may need to add an antenna, especially when the cell tower is not visible to the naked eye. Sometimes, the cost of the antenna can equal that of the router, and it's worth considering purchasing a ready-made device, like the Zyxel LTE7460-M608, where the antenna and router are combined. Moreover, this solution is resilient to temperature fluctuations and precipitation. On the other hand, a USB modem or a regular router isn't suited for outdoor use, and it would struggle in a regular attic – it would overheat in the summer and freeze in the winter. Additionally, increasing the length of the cable assembly from the antenna to the receiving device can negate any benefits of installing a good, expensive antenna. The rule is: the closer the radio module is to the antenna, the fewer losses and higher the speed.
For those who love figures, I've compiled the results of all tests into a table, with the last column showing the cost of the setup. Devices are highlighted in color, whether they include antennas or not, for easier visual search of the results.
Separately, I decided to test the router's functionality without any obstacles and with an obstacle in the form of double-glazed windows. This means simply placing the Zyxel LTE7460-M608 router in front of and behind the window. The reception speed dropped imperceptibly, but the transmission speed decreased almost threefold. If the glass has any kind of coating, the results will be even more disappointing. The conclusion is clear: there should be as few obstacles as possible between the antenna and the base station.

<img decoding="async" alt="Internet for summer cottage owners. However, even without an additional antenna, this speed is sufficient for watching videos or conducting video conferences via Skype. Nevertheless, the graphs clearly indicate that using an antenna can increase speed several times. One must find a balance between the investment made and the results obtained. For example, purchasing the Zyxel LTE3316-M604 and a panel antenna can yield better results than a ready-made device like the Zyxel LTE7460-M608. However, the panel antenna will be nearly twice as large, and the router must be placed in close proximity to the antenna, which might pose some challenges.
In the end, the winner of the speed test is the Zyxel LTE3316-M604 with the large panel antenna. It requires some effort to orient the antenna correctly, and the router's interface is only available in English, which may cause discomfort for some users. The winner in the functionality test is the Keenetic Viva with a 4G modem. This router can operate both in an apartment with traditional internet and at a dacha, where only mobile networks are available. The winner in the ready-made solutions test is the Zyxel LTE7460-M608. This all-weather router is advantageous because it can be placed anywhere; it withstands all weather conditions, but for optimal operation, it requires a Wi-Fi access point, a mesh system, or an organized local network. For frequent trips and car travel, the Huawei E5372 mobile router is a great option – it can work both independently and while being connected to a charger or power bank. If you want maximum speed for minimal cost, consider the TP-Link Archer MR200 v1 – it has a good radio module and the option to connect an external antenna, although some defective units were reported.

ANNOUNCEMENT

<img decoding="async" alt="Internet for summer cottage owners.
