Ted Ts'o, the author of the ext2\/ext3\/ext4 filesystem, accepted<\/a><\/noindex> has added to the Linux-next branch, from which the Linux kernel 5.2 release will be formed, a set the changes<\/a><\/noindex>, implementing case-insensitive operations support in the Ext4 file system. The patches also add support for UTF-8 characters in file names.<\/p>\n

Case-insensitive mode can be optionally enabled in association with specific directories using the new attribute \u2018+F\u2019 (EXT4_CASEFOLD_FL). When this attribute is set on a directory, all operations involving files and subdirectories within it will be case-insensitive, meaning that case will be ignored during file searches and openings (for example, files Test.txt, test.txt, and test.TXT in such directories will be treated as the same). By default, except for directories with the \u2018+F\u2019 attribute, the filesystem remains case-sensitive. The patches were prepared by Gabriel Krisman Bertazi, an employee of Collabora, and accepted after the seventh<\/a><\/noindex> attempt after three years<\/a><\/noindex> Development and issue resolution do not alter the disk storage format and operate solely at the level of changing the name comparison logic in the ext4_lookup() function and replacing the hash in the dcache (Directory Name Lookup Cache) structure. The value of the \u2018+F\u2019 attribute is preserved within the inodes of individual directories and extends to all nested files and subdirectories. To avoid collisions with existing file names, the \u2018+F\u2019 attribute can only be set on empty directories in filesystems where Unicode support for file and directory names is enabled at mount time. The names of directory entries for which the \u2018+F\u2019 attribute is activated are automatically converted to lowercase and reflected as such in the dcache, but are stored on disk in the originally specified user format, meaning that despite name processing being case-insensitive, names are displayed and stored without losing information about character case (the system will not allow creating a file name with the same characters but in a different case).<\/p>\n
