Firstly, like the previous material dedicated to installing Linux Mint 19<\/a><\/noindex> Next to Windows 10, this is aimed at beginner users, meaning it will contain as few technical complexities as possible. We won't even address the terminal (console interface). This is not a user manual, but rather introductory material for those just getting acquainted with the OS. Secondly, for simplicity, we will refer to the System Settings section\u2014a gray icon with two toggles in the main menu\u2014as the Control Panel. Thirdly, for many actions, you will need to enter your user password in a separate window titled Authenticate. We will not mention this separately each time, so during the setup, you can be unconcerned about entering your password, but in 'free operation,' please pay attention to when and why you are asked for your password to perform administrative actions.<\/p>\n

In this material, we will examine screen and font settings, configure the keyboard and input layout switching, briefly go over the network and firewall settings, learn about Bluetooth and sound functionalities, install the multifunction printer and drivers for graphics cards, understand how to search for and install programs, manage files and disks, and make some basic adjustments to the OS. Regarding the second point of the welcome dialog\u2014the driver manager\u2014we will return to it shortly when discussing the installation of discrete graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA. However, it\u2019s not difficult, as you can choose between the proprietary driver from the manufacturer or the open one when various driver options are available. So let's move on to the next point, which is the update manager. Again, there\u2019s nothing complicated here: at the top, there are buttons for checking updates, for selecting all updates, and for installing them. The next item for adjusting the desktop view can be tailored to your preference. By default, the «Modern» style is used, which resembles the design of the latest Windows versions. In the initial system settings, it's sufficient to change two parameters. First, select the appropriate screen resolution if the default doesn't suit you. Second, configure the keyboard layout switch. Both of these can be done in the respective sections of the Hardware settings. The screen settings are straightforward, but for the keyboard in the Layouts section, you need to click on the Parameters… button, find the option for switching layouts, and choose a suitable keyboard shortcut: for example, Alt+Shift does not conflict with any other combinations.<\/p>\n

Here, you can also verify that the selected layouts match those actually present on your keyboard. Note that in Linux, additional keys are traditionally named differently. The Windows key is usually called Super, and the right Alt (Gr) may be Meta. So don't be surprised if you see combinations with these terms on the adjacent tab  Key Combinations. Some combinations match those in Windows, but in Linux, there are, firstly, many more of them, and secondly, all of them can be remapped to your liking. Multimedia keys for controlling the player or launching the browser\/mail\/search mostly work out of the box, including combinations with Fn, which is relevant for laptops or compact keyboards.<\/p>\n

Optionally, you can configure a couple more settings related to displaying content on the screen. First, in the  General section, there is a simple selection for the interface scaling method, which is useful for some modern high-resolution monitors. There is also an option to enable VBlank — this is necessary for older monitors. Secondly, in the  Font Selection section, you should specify your desired fonts (we will discuss installing new ones below), play with the smoothing and hinting parameters if the current text appearance on the screen does not satisfy you. Text scaling is also configured there, and it affects the display of interface elements.<\/p>\n

It is also important to note a few other nuances. Font, scaling, and overall interface styling settings may not work for all applications. This is due to some programs (like browsers, for example) rendering independently, and also because you might encounter utilities created using different sets of libraries and components for building graphical interfaces. You are unlikely to need to configure network connections, as both wired and wireless connections should work properly. Some additional actions may be required if the network does not operate at full speed or, for instance, without DHCP. You can access the settings by clicking on the icon with three blocks in the notification area. The menu has two items: Network Options and Network Connections. The first allows you to learn the basic information about connections and configure basic IP and proxy settings.<\/p>\n

The second item provides access to additional adapter settings. You can also click the + button to add a new VPN connection or activate another network adapter. However, all this is unlikely to be necessary. If the adapter is not visible in the system at all, then you will need to go to the manufacturer's website for drivers and search online to find out the installation and setup procedure. Unfortunately, this is the process for any 'hardware' that hasn't automatically started working in the system.<\/p>\n

Configuring the firewall is also related to the network, but it is recommended to postpone this until everything is installed and running correctly. However, the setup is quite simple. In the Control Panel, there is a corresponding item: Firewall. Initially, three profiles are set up: for home, work environment, and public places. The home profile, by default, blocks all incoming connections, while outgoing connections are allowed. After activating the firewall (Status switch), the Report tab will display the network activity of various programs. In this list, you can select the required process and click the plus button at the bottom to create a new rule\u2014default settings are usually sufficient.<\/p>\n

There were no significant issues with Bluetooth on the test system either. However, it's essential to remember that if a device has specific functions, it may not always operate correctly. Some additional adjustments in the relevant settings may still be necessary. For example, for a Bluetooth speaker in the audio settings (quickly accessible by clicking the speaker icon in the notification area) \u2014 I had to select it as the output device, which is entirely logical. By the way, there are a couple of other useful features in the same settings. On the Applications tab, you can adjust the volume of any application's sound or even tabs in the browser currently playing audio. The Settings tab allows you to set a volume limit for the entire OS.<\/p>\n

With this, the basic setup can be considered complete. By looking at the names of the other elements in the control panel, it's easy to guess what they are responsible for. We won't dwell on them separately since the remaining settings are more about preferences rather than technicalities.<\/p>\n

Users leave feedback on the performance of various hardware on the community site<\/a><\/noindex>. Note that the same device may be listed under different names, so it's best to try searching with several variations of the name \u2014 from the full name to the model number \u2014 and to look in different categories. Along with reviews, there are sometimes tips on solving certain problems or on configurations. For example, in the database for the well-known Epson Stylus SX125 MFP, there are five entries. However, there were no significant issues with its installation. When connected to the PC, a notification appeared immediately.
