The use of 3D printing no longer surprises anyone. Items can be printed at home and at work from both metal and plastic. The only remaining tasks are to reduce the nozzle resolution and increase the variety of raw materials. There is still a lot of work to be done in both of these areas.<\/p>\n

Another achievement in the advancement of 3D printing was announced by<\/a><\/noindex> scientists led by researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). They presented a new promising technology for printing micro-objects in metals with extremely high resolution\u2014up to 250 nm. Currently, 3D printing of metallic micro-objects is accomplished using specially manufactured inks. These are nanoparticles of metal suspended in a liquid. The resolution of such printers is in micrometers, and the printing process is completed with a necessary annealing step to solidify the model. This final stage has many drawbacks, including poor porosity and contamination with organics (solvents). So what do the Swiss propose?<\/p>\n

The researchers from Zurich replaced the metal suspension with direct printing using metals. More precisely, with metal ions. A print head design with two so-called expendable anodes has been proposed. Why two? Because it's better! You can print a metallic micro-object alternately with one or the other metal, or even with both at the same time, effectively creating an alloy with the desired ratio of the materials. The principle of this proposed 3D printing is that under high voltage supplied to the anode, metal ions are dislodged and travel to the substrate, where they settle and transform into the original metal. For this to work, the substrate is coated with a layer of solvent, in which oxidation-reduction chemical reactions take place. This allows for clean metal printing without requiring subsequent annealing.<\/p>\n

There are many applications for such technologies. However, the first that comes to mind is microelectronics and the creation of metamaterials with unusual properties. Printing with such precision will help create ultra-fine connections and even enable the use of organic materials in electronics. When talking about metamaterials, the combination of metals can lead to materials with interesting mechanical properties, such as being both flexible and strong.<\/p>\n
